What if our day was only 10 hours?

My son got one of those "facts" books at Chritmas. One section on the planets says Jupiter rotates every 10 hours.

The Earth of course rotates every 24 hours, so our "days" are built round roughly 8 hours sleeping, 8 hours at work, and 8 hours for "everything else".

But I began to wonder what what have happened to us if the Earth rotated every 10 hours, and we had 5 hours daylight and then 5 hours darkness.

Would we sleep for roughly 3 hours every night, work for roughly 3 hours and do everything else in the remaining 3 or so hours?

If we only worked for only 3 hours each day by the time you got to work it would almost be time to leave.

Can anyone else think of "strange" behaviour if our "day" was only 10 hours?

    Nothing on TV?

i think it would be interesting.... possibly working for 1 day, sleeping/relaxing for 1 day, working 1 day.
    lol

It takes 11.86 Earth years for Jupiter to orbit the sun once (this is a Jovian year).

Plenty of time to save for those xmas presents.

    Just found this;
On Jupiter, and other fast-rotating planets, the Coriolis effect is so strong that North-South winds (of the sort on the left) are transformed into East-West winds (of the sort on the right) that are so fast that the difference in motion from regions that blow mostly to the East or mostly to the West can exceed 1000 miles per hour. Needless to say, at the boundary between such regions, very powerful storms are created

So I'll stick to the 24 hours we have for now.

we would have evolved differently (if you believe in evolution) who knows... maybe 10hrs a day cant support human level of intelligence or support our current way of life eg we could only survive as nomads or something as (intensive) farming might not work.... very interesting thread op! i'll be thinking about this tonight!

If you really wanna be technical our days are only really actually 23 hoours and 56 mins long ( or somewhere abouts) Hence the reason we have a leap year .... i think

Interesting but the human body is designed for 8hrs sleep. I work 12hr shifts days and nights, so that throws your theory off a bit.

huh? he said "about" and obviously there are some people that dont fit the average. and at most places you get paid extra for doing night shifts

    Not "designed" more like evolved.

All life on the earths surface has lived with 12 hours day and 12 hours night for millions of years, so much life has evolved into sleeping during the hours of darkness.

I am sure if an earth day was say 48 hours we would have elvoved to sleep much longer.

close but no cigar. A solar day is 24 hours. An earth day is 23hrs,56min, 4.1secs but isnt the reason we have a leap year.

It takes the earth 365 and 1/4 days to revolve around the sun hence a leap day every 4 years. It has nothing to do with the earths rotation on its axis
