If you are into design then it's the industry standard, Apple computers are very very reliable too.

Haven't my PC's been reliable too?

Agreed. They just run better and are so much easier to use. Definitely worth getting one. Fab machines.

    :thumbsup::w00t:

they are the best. mine came with wirless internet mouse keyboard. So a whole computer with just a power cable.

they are fast, start in seconds. last years without a single problem.

i grew up building pcs from 286, 386, 486. taking hard disks ram out of them. adding new power units new graphics. Macs just work. buy one. take it out the box. no cds/dvds. switch it on 5 minutes later your surfing the net, editing photos etc.

    Totally agree MrPlay.
My PC takes 3 minutes to load up from shut down mode. Mac takes less than a minute. Had my iMac for 2 years and it's been great. Windows laptop ran for 18 months before it totally shut down on me.

i'm currently posting via my 24 inch aluminium iMac i received last week.

its a beautiful piece of kit. well worth the money imo.

they are very trendy, and you can't play crysis on them

    Lovely pieces of engineering

    Quite (only quite) bespoke

Very fast as they are produced by 1 manufacturer, (pc's have to deal with different manufacturers interpretations of the rules about what they install on their h/ware). The h/ware and especially bios etc has to contend with Linux/MS 2000/XP/etc.

All together a much better made machine, unfortunately its redeeming points can also be it downfall, e.g. doesn't have such a broad range of games etc.

All in all, I'd say its probably worth a small amount extra, but its definitely one for you to investigate up front before buying, ( will your favourite game run on it/browser etc)

Anything thats not mickey soft is good by me, but thats my opinion!

I would say the only universally good thing about the iMac is that it's silent and cool. Desirable properties for any computer, though of course not unique to the iMac.

Factors that could be considered good or bad are the styling and the all-on-one nature. The styling appeals to some people but not others. Personally I find it a bit plain and I think it would be much improved by some simple measures like a nice etched design and some beveling on the edges. The all-in-one nature does cut down on cables and boxes but it also reduces your upgrade potential and makes things harder to fix.

The bad bits include it's poor ergonomics (all the ports are hidden around the back and the stand isn't height adjustable), the surprising lack of ports, the poor value for money and poor availible specifications.

From my experience of the iMac it doesn't seem to be a competitor to the PC desktop. It appears to be a machine for the group of people who both like it's styling and can live with it's shortcomings.

p.s. Add to the first point a lack of bright blue LEDs. A good point on any product.

as hardware, the imacs are pretty bad value for money but the question is not about what is go good about imacs but more "what is so good about os x" i know thats why i bought imac....

although there is nothing you can do on a mac that you cant do on a pc and even more that pcs can do that macs cant

as hardware, the imacs are pretty bad value for money

Disagree with that, they last a lot longer than the average PC so you get what you pay for in the long run, I know so many people who have paid £300 for cheap laptops or PC's only to have to replace them 18 months later as they are completely knackered, I have had Apple computers for 13 years now and never had one die on me yet.

Imacs pretty much silent. comes with remote which is a few buttons and stylish. music/photos/ movies all one timy remote.

    imacs are amazing

A £1000 machine will last longer than a £300 machine? Wow, what a revalation. I'm sure you'll change the course of modern philosophy with that insight!

Again, you can't compare the build quality of a second hand £1500 machine with a brand new £400 acer laptop. Buy a second hand top of the range thinkpad or sony and compare that with your powerbook.

Actually, the thing that really puts me off the integrated monitor is that you can't use it as a sodding monitor. Especially if you're a demanding user and will outgrow the iMac's spec in a three or four years you essentially then just have to throw the £450 monitor on to the rubbish dump - there's no easy way to carry on using it with a better PC. You might be able to bodge something up using remote desktop or synergy but I can't fathom why apple didn't include a simple DVI-in in the first place.

Well if you buy an imac you can say your amongst the intellectual elite, like chris moyles

Ever heard of a Mac Mini or Mac Pro?

Hey im a photographer. I like stylish equipment. i like stylish clothes, i love macs. So stylish.

if i had to look at numbers all day then maybe id choose a boring pc. If i want it to work i choose mac. never let me down. Pc i would not waste my time.

Im happy theirs a divide. you can spot a mac user and you can spot a pc user.

the mac people are usally doing the things pc users look at on their screens.

    Powerbook still better than vaio

uhh that Mac Mini is terrible and for n00bs it cant get anywhere near the specs of the imac, no dedicated video card, a maximum hard drive space of 200gb or something,

and Mac Pro? hah are yes okay beginning at £1500 I will double the amount of money I want to spend on a mac just because apple don't actually make mid range computers without screens attacked.

oo oo oo i know that one,, err i forgot,,,, what was the question again?

Vadim, Alienware, Rock. Take your pick of high end laptop manufacturers to compare it with. I've never been lucky enough to use any £1500 laptop but I'd be surprised if apple's laptop hardware was consistently better than it's rivals in every aspect, especially as I've heard that the macbook pro keyboard is supposed to be less than excellent.

Uh, what? Nobody's trying to deny that some people really like the design of the iMac so I'm not sure what point you're trying to make here.

I'd agree with you there, neither are alternatives to the iMac. The mac pro has Xeon processors and FB-DIMMs which just add to the price and slow down the performance of a home system. The mac mini isn't a bad computer in itself but while the iMac can at least hop along behind a PC in performance, the mac mini is completely out if it if you need more than a basic computer.

You wouldnt understand till you owned one. For years ive been buying Windows PC's E.g. HP/IBM ETC ETC

Brought a Power Mac and on my way home I was thinking I just spent more then £1.5k on a machine. Then once you get it home and open it, youll see how much of a nice of machinery it is. Buy the iMac!

macs are great, well designed elegant and reliable bits of kit - but obviously you have to pay abit more generally. It depends on what you want to use it for, case in point :
i first started out with audio production on pc and it was a nightmare, external soundcard wouldnt get recognized unless it was on before the pc specifically - then when being used the drivers would glitch and the card would either cut out completely or suffer major drop outs. Sequencers would crash on mixdowns etc.
then i transfer the same card to mac and wow - on a comparatively low spec'd emac , you could turn the card on whenever and the mac would adjust drivers and switch inputs automatically. It didnt crash at all and everything worked smoothly.

you sold me, one cable for the pc now that is amazing, my pc has so many wires omg, the only thing that puts me off is the fact some softwares dont work on pc, other then that might hacve to get one as my next desktop computer.

whens the next imac comming out?

unless apple come out with an imac without a screen type configuration or mini tower (and the ]demand sure is there) then I was planning to save up for a mac pro, when my DVD drive went in my imac that was the last straw i bought an external one but it was a real eye opener, if i had a mac pro I would just be able to replace it, everytime i want to increase the specs I need a new machine, I would rather just get a mac pro and have it last me about 5 years

@cold_toast: Was it a creative device?

MACs look better, no doubt about that. However, I find you are limited with MACs. The software is not as vast as it is for PCs and to be honest a few friends MACs have gone wrong on them.

Its also down to the user for PC's. Personally myself I rarely have much go wrong with my computers (i work with them)

I had a Dell d620 laptop which never went wrong which I had for almost 2 years.

PC's/MAC's do go wrong, neither is perfect in my opinion.

I always say that its down to what you want from a PC and you should evaulate it like that.

I.e. if you dont play graphical games why buy an XPS?

I disagree. I was a PC user all my life until 2005 and while there is much more software available for Windows based computers compared to OS X, the quality of mac programs outweighs the quantity of windows software, which is usually of bad quality anyway.

I've yet to find a windows software program that i used to use that i couldn't find an alternative for my mac.

There are thousands of free, very good, high quality programs available for the mac made by independent developers.
