What is the best Supermarket own branded Brandy ? (Recommendations and ratings please)

Posted 22nd Oct 2011
Every year a family relation always receives an expensive branded VSOP or XO Cognac or Brandy as a Christmas present. Unfortunately money is tight this year, and he never reciprocates the gift, so I wondering what Supermarket Brandy, Armagnac or Cognac would you recommend and rate. The local supermarkets in Bracknell are Aldi, Morrisons, Tesco's, Sainsburys and Waitrose, but please add your opinions on Lidl, Budgens, Co-op and Asda for other users.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank You

why on earth would you continually keep buying expensive brandy for someone who never sends you a present? Especially, if you're skint!

If you know anyone going to Spain or the Canary Islands etc, ask them to buy a bottle of 102 Negra at the duty free on the way back. It's very well priced and very good.

I dont drink but my father in law does... he likes his brandy, and has his favourites.... expensive ones i may addd... well we bought some tesco value brandy for cooking....(you dont need the good stuff for cooking) and he loves it (in a glass).

So id say give tesco value a go... usually approx £8 for 1L i think!

Thank you so far for recommendations, please keep them coming. The Three … Thank you so far for recommendations, please keep them coming. The Three Barrels Brandy VSOP is on my possible list, if it drops below £12 for 70cl (currently £14.39). Have purchased the Three Barrels Brandy XO two years ago, but it's now £22.39.

get him nothing it does my head in buying people presents.

My missus buys everyone in her family tons of presents every year and my family get nothing as i prefer to get thm nothing and get nothing from them.

I spend a fortune on missus and daughter and the old ladies at the post office but thats it. All you get in return is a bunch of crap you dont want because know one puts thought in to it because them dont actually care

Thank you for your recommendation, but sadly Asda is about 10 miles away. Although with Sainsburys matching their nearest competitors, hopefully the price will fall to £12.

A very good question. Obligation mainly, but also while everyone else is receiving presents he is always left out of the loop. Usually I prefer to give than receive presents, and seeing a person feeling wanted and happy does have it's own rewards.

Morrisons currently have an offer on the Three Barrels V.S.O.P. Brandy for £10. Unfortunately went into the local supermarket in Bracknell, on the day of the offer and all their stock had sold out by 9.30am. So asked the assistant stacking items on nearby shelves, and she replied that a person had purchased all the bottles the previous night. As the offer hadn't started until the Monday, and in the past I've spoken to workers at the local branch who confirmed that they got first opportunity to purchase any stock on offer, I am slightly dubious to her answer.

Does anyone have any ideas about good reasonably-priced brandies in Southern hemisphere? I'm in Wellington, New Zealand - there's not much choice around here!
