What is the difference between HD TV 1080i and 1080p ? i'm only getting 1080i from SKY HD i think

Right i now have sky HD and a sony KDL 40D3500 40" tv, i have a Hdmi wire connected and full hd subscription. My tv is meant to be full hd 1080p but when ever i turn it on the little information window that comes on for a few seconds says 1080i on it? i thought 1080p was the highest and best picture possible, does anyone know more about 1080i and 1080p and suggest what i can try to get the best possible picture!

    Cheers.

Sky only broadcasts 1080i, you're getting as good a picture as anyone else with Sky HD.

Right thanks for the answers now i know im not missing owt! Is there any place i can go to see if i can improve my settings on my tv (Sony KDL 40D3500) for a better picture, i know sometimes the factory setting are not the best ones to have.

sky hd broadcasts at either 720p or 1080i. 1080i - or interlaced means that there is 1920 pixels x 1080 lines on-screen; the interlace part means your tv will draw line 1,3,5,7,9,11 etc then 2,4,6,8,10 etc in 2 passes with each pass lasting approx 1/60th of a second. whereas 1080p is progressive this means it draws line 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, etc in 1 pass, Which makes for a smoother, cleaner image, especially with sports and other motion-intensive content.

    Hope this helps

Use your own eyes to set it up to your own liking.

many thanks, can i trust what i read on this site, i.e is it good like huk'd? rep on the way!

With regards to the ideal settings, you can get some DVD's which have a THX optimizer. I know that it is on the star wars DVD's. It basically displays a picture then gives you advice on how you should tune your picture.

Failing that I just fiddled with my TV (and still frequently do) to adjust the setting to my liking

1080i on my old LG plasma looked blooming fantastic, on my Samsung, i cant decide between i or p lol

Unless you have a very big TV, you won't notice any difference between 1080i and 1080p
To notice the difference you need to be sitting very close,.
