What is the point in Royal Mail recorded delivery?

Does anyone know what is the percentage of packages that are sent "recorded delivery" are actually signed for.

I have received my fair share of recorded items which the postie never bothers to get me to sign for.

Like wise I have sold items on ebay and received positive feedback, despite the fact the tracking information shows "We (RM) still have your item". Clearly the posties are not doing their jobs right. I would reckon 75% signed for 25% not signed for.

On another point if I have paid for "recorded delivery" but the item has been delivered without signature can I complain and get my money back?

At one time it was at least 10% of my deliveries that weren't being signed for. So i kicked off by emailing Adam Crozier, shortly afterwards I was told that there was a memo going out in the Postie newsletter reminding them of their duties and that it is a disciplinary matter if they don't.

Yes you can complain and recover your fees, 75p, as the service hasn't been carried out. I regularly claim back my fees in monthly batches of about 20-30 items, sometimes more. I always get a cheque and for those that have been signed for but not uploaded to the system I get the proofs sent to me.

Thanks for that, how do you complain, is it online or fil in form at post office?

If it's small enough to fit through the letter box, my estimate is 10% get signed.

If it's too big for the letter box, most get signed for.

I generally use a multi claims form due to the number of items I need to claim for, if you are only claiming for one the P58 which can be downloaded from their site or picked up from your local Post office counter. I got the Multi claims form from the claims department. As you are only claiming for the recorded delivery charge there is no need to provide proof to confirm what you have sent other than remind them that the tracking id on their system will be fine and confirms the sending of the item.

Just email bulk.enquiry@royalmail.com and ask them for a 'Multi Claims form', it will be an excel spreadsheet, then you just mail it back to them.

Thanks simplyjimbo for the information. I might have a few more to claim for. I posted 11 items last week recorded so chances are a couple more wont be signed for.

Makes me laugh when people send stuff under a fiver recorded,i never do that on Ebay and i haven't had a claim yet,RD can be a waste of time.

To start , as posted RM = rubbish.
I always saw recorded as a way to prove delivery to buyers that claim to not have recevied. You get tracking once signed for as proof. As soon as I say "I used recorded and have proof of receipt "they will claim that the other half signed for it.

Problem is that many posties will sign for you and post as normal. For me its handy so I don't have to rush to the door (bad joints and a set of stairs to tackle).
