What is the website to check if a phone is blacklisted?

I purchased a phone from CEX online, had it all day today and for some reason it wont register with any network. Just says emergency calls only, tried the same sim cards in my other phone and they show up with the network name and full signal bars.

Now im concerned whether the phone is blocked or something and want to check if it is. But i have completely forgot the name of the website, its a service you pay £1.99 for.. unless anyone else knows any other website to check on??

CheckMEND

Personally I would not bother, but just take it back. CEX will refund/replace the phone once they have tried their own PAYG SIM cards on it/re-run the CheckMEND report that they already paid for when they bought the phone off the previous owner.

Oh yes thats what it is!

Could i not report this matter to the police? I know cex would simply refund/swap the phone but they should have checked this prior to selling?

And I am sure they did, it does not make business sense not to. At some point after they bought it and run the check the network must have blocked it.

Of course there is always the possibility of a dodgy SIM card slot as well.

I am not certain what Police procedure is, but the first thing I would do as front desk staff is take the phone off you and not give it back, after all it may be stolen property.

I wouldnt involve the police as theyll do exactly as summoner says

I will give them a visit tomorrow, I would really like to exchange it instead of getting a refund. The thing is i purchased it online and am returning it in store, but they dont have any in stock for same phone anywhere near me - would they have to order it from another store to my house/store? Or just offer me a refund?

its on different network.i got one off ebay saying unlocked .wanted vodafone and was saying emergency calls only .tryed a o2 sim and worked.also check if the simcard is in date

This is not a CEX problem, all phones are checked against the CheckMEND database at the time of purchase. They then are checked again if they require a repair at one of the repair centres.

Unfortunately this is a huge problem for CEX and customers and occurs because of insurance fraud.

Customer sells phone, usually high value or new phone to CEX.

CEX buys phone, checks it and everything comes back clear.

Soon after the customer puts an insurance claim in to say their phone got lost.

They block the phone and causes this problem.

Bring it back to a store.

They can do a check there and then and will offer a refund or replacement if you wish.

All the best

CEX seem to have a lot of stolen stuff pass through their doors, not saying they don't care or anything.

Is there a database, so the greedy seller gets caught out as CEX require proof of i.d or is it just at their own expense to deal with people doing that.

Watched a guy taking in a bunch of the same sealed DVDs a few weeks back, clearly shoplifted them as they were all the same title of a brand new film.
Cex didn't bat an eyelid, simply scanned and paid out.
Have seen customers kick off in game returning blocked phones shouting about being not the first phone they've had from them that ended up blocked.
Something they can't future proof for unfortunately.

Maybe the guy spotted them at a cheap price and knowing that CEX buy in at a higher price bought a load to sell for cheap CEX credit. this is actually quite common....

Police raid a number of CEX branches

^the guy was a proper shifty drug addled skank.a wild guess he used five fingered discount.

Noooo, after all that effort to get the phone it's arrived as a dud! Such bad luck. I'm kind of gutted for you. I hope that you get it sorted.

Yes, they have quite a firm solicitors firm who chase them up. CEX are left with a phone that they are unable to sell.

It cost them a fortune.

Unfortunately if they treated everyone as a suspect, their business would slump and they wouldnt do so well

They have strict guidelines to buying new items and it is unfortunate that some stores do not follow them as the policy states.

Any luck today, on what happened?

Can I ask what phone did you buy?

Thanks

Exactly! Was up all night sorting it out and received it faulty

Anyways,

A positive update. They did accept the return without hesitation, checked over the phones IMEI and did confirm its blocked and issued me with a exchange for same item from a different store (since they had no stock in same store). They weren't surprised over the fact it was blocked, guess it happens alot! I did ask what happens now with the phone and the guy told me they have no idea n guess it goes to the correct department at the HQ to resolve the issue.
