What makes a Good pair of headphones, Good?

I want to buy a pair of overhead headphones, but the thing is what do all these frequencies etc mean?

Could someone help me what frequencies are supposed to be good?
Earphones: from 20 Hz to 20 KHz etc? all these magnets?

If only i know i'd know what to look for!

I've tried googling but i end up having a load of websites who sell headphones with nothing to help me!

    Thank youuu

Well humans can only 'hear' between 20Hz and 20KHz (although as you get older you can usually only hear up to a certain frequency, usually lower than 20kHz).

Anyway, that would be the frequency response of the headphone. Pretty useless information however as it doesn't take into account the 'curve' of this response, i.e. it may be able to reproduce lower frequencies in the 20-100hz range but they may dip off dramatically.

have a look at some Grado headphones.

here's what i got from that..
    Tranducer type
    dynamic
    Operating principle open air
    Frequency response 18-24
    SPL 1mV 98
    Normal impedance 32ohms
    Driver matched db .05

Sorry its a bit limited info, but i dont know what i should be looking for - by what you said anyone can just say - look at bose/panasonic/beats etc headphones.

What makes them stand out from the rest? (other than the price?)

Try searching for headphones buyers guides.

The Gadget show have a nice video clip that might help you. Here's a link:

because grado make high quality well built headphones. in my opinion.

think what you really need to do is forget about the numbers and just go to a good hifi shop with a couple of your favourite CDs and find something that sounds good to your ears.
