    What should I say??

    Banned
I recently smashed the fire alarm in my University halls, on a drunken night out. I wanted to test to see how strong the caging was on the outside of the alarm, I tapped in and it smashed fully setting the alarm off throughout the block. I admitted to doing it, and today received a letter demanding me to meet with the site manager. I'm potentially going to receive a fine of £150 for this stupid act, but that's the standard fine for if a fire engine turns up and one didn't turn up so hopefully it will be less. But what should I say to her in the meeting?? It really was a mistake and I was only playing about, and didn't mean to harm anyone. I feel £150 would be a harsh punishment for a little mistake.

Let me know your ideas on the situation. Should I just tell the truth? Even though I suspect telling the truth will result in the fine for being reckless when drunk.

    Thanks
    David

    The letter reads:

"I should be pleased if you could meet with me on or before Monday 16 February 2009. My office is located within the Reception at 6...

This is to discuss an incident that has been reported to me.

Please note that should you not attend, disciplinary action could be taken against you which may also include a fine.

I look forward to meeting you.

    Yours sincerely

    Deana Boulton"

you should pay for your stupid 'mishap' - if you cant hold your drink and thus this leads you into doing stupid things that cost other people money then you should be made to not only pay for the repairs but also the inconvenience caused to everyone else and any other incidentals !

i agree, that setting off the alarm, could've meant someone could've been harmed if a real fire had broken out and everyone thought it was what you did,

best just be honest, apologise and accept whatever punishment they give you

hope you've learnt never to play around with things that are meant to save lives..

Time to become a Man and confess but admit that you were stupid

Just tell a white lie. I would and it will probably save your student ass some cash.

If they dont know you set it off on purpose say you fell over and hit the damn thing. Or if it was dark you banged into it. As you were drunk your awareness will have decreased and your balance will of been flawed too.

By saying your deeply sorry for your actions that were unintended and that you already have hefty student debts might get you off lightly. Maybe there is another way to fine you other than money? I'd take the 'non-financial' punishment if there was one.

You can also add that you will be extremely cautious in the future and never intned to get so drunk again given what has happened.

I might have wriggled my way out of some things in the past, it all depends whether that site manager is a ***** or not. Good luck.

£150 = consider yourself lucky. My mate got kicked out of halls for it. Good on you for owning up though mate

Grow up - you've admitted to it, great. Just accept the punishment and move on.

Pay up. If it's £150, you'll not forget about it in a hurry - that's why there's a fine attached to the offence.

If you're at Uni and can afford to get drunk, then this probably equates to 3 nights out. Looks like you'll have a few nights in to think about it tho...

Ironically you'll probably learn more about life from this experience than 3-5 years in Uni.

you will learn a harsh lesson here, don't do it again as it really could cost lives.
Accept your punishment and move on.

    Like he said.

Just think how many others have made this "silly mistake" before you ........
it can potentially cost lives that are worth far more than your £150 fine.

Good on you for owning up though. We all do things we later regret.
    Live and learn.

maybe you thought it was a doorbell?

tbh your lucky if they dont kick you out

Fess up and take it on the ass.

But do so humbly and not with an attitude.

Apologise - say that you're really sorry and exactly what for.

Tell them you've learnt your lesson and you really wont do it again.

If you get fined 150 quid it isnt the end of the world, and you will know you did the right thing and you can be proud of yourself.

Good luck with it, I hope for you that the site manager is in a good mood xxx

Such a hoax call could have cost somebody else their life.

i agree... count yourself lucky to just get a fine

Tell the truth, say you're sorry and pay the fine.

Everyone at uni knows how seriously they take students mucking about with fire alarms......

Do as Chesso advises and hopefully they won't throw you out of halls....

Thanks for the advice so far everyone. I doubt they will throw me out of halls, as my flat mate did the same thing, and decided to start burning his receipts in his room. The fire alarm went and 3 fire engines turned up. He was charged £150 and there was no mention of being kicked out. I know its stupid and we are meant to be intelligent attending Newcastle University. I really regret my actions and intend to be as honest as I have already been, with the fact I owned up in the 1st place.

You want to know what to say? Pretty much what I've put in bold. They'll appreciate the honesty and given you've been straight up with them so far, it should put you in good stead.

I would make a point and say a less honest student wouldn't have come forward and this alone *should* count for something. Hopefully they'll agree. All they really want is some assurance you won't do it again.

When my husband has done summin wrong, he expects brownie points for tellin me the truth about it, too! It doesn't work like that, it's still summin wrong. Just telling them the truth and apologising will be cool, dont ruin it by making out that you're better than someone else would have been in the same situation! Too risky!!!

As the saying goes; "If you can't do the time then don't commit the crime!"

Pay the fine if unavoidable and consider yourself lucky not to be chucked out...

Well ye it took a lot to actually get in, so setting fire alarms off isn't exactly clever from someone who is meant to be mature lol.

No worries. I doubt she'd even look on here to be honest. My fault if she does lol. Not exactly insinuated anything negative towards her though, just generally asked for advice.

I would definitely offer to pay for the broken glass they had to replace.

As a p.s. me and some mates were testing the strength of the glass at PRIMARY school (cough cough) you know 9-10yrs old we were pretending to push it and this other boy came up and goes nah it's really strong and it smashed.

I would go for the defence, ooops I made a mistake I won't do it again. lol.

    goodluck at the meeting dude

Don't forget, a private company CAN'T fine you, they can only invoice you for damages/costs

However, with it being uni, it may well be prudent to cough up, if the worst come to the worst, which it probably won't even come to.

If you don't pay a uni fine you won't get your degree, simple as. OP - be honest, be humble and apologetic, arrive to the meeting early/on-time, there is a chance they won't fine you but my guess is they probably will; take it as a hard lesson and pay the fine as soon as you can. Everyone has done something they regret when drunk, it could have been worse!

If you will struggle to pay the fine, make it clear that you accept responsibility and the fine but ask there and then if arrangements can be made to pay back in installments etc - if you're very polite about it they will probably be sympathetic.

It doesn't work like that in your house/relationship. Not the same as the big wide world now, is it? What you're suggesting doesn't encourage anyone to tell the truth. The whole point of 'rewarding' people who are honest is to encourage the behaviour. From what you're saying I wouldn't ever bother telling you the truth as the punishment's going to be the same anyway!
