What to buy in New York City???

I am shortly due to travel to the USA for the first time ever and am really looking forward to it.

A few mates have advised me to look out for fantastic deals on console games (ie., Wii, PS2, DS,) DVD's and CD's but I thought the Americans used differant formats to the European market???

Can someone recommend what to buy and what to avoid so I can make the most of my shopping experience!! I don't want to travel home with items I can't use!

So which items are the best deals???
Thanks in anticipation!

iPods start at £75 as opposed to £100 here, so you could always buy those. In fact, all Apple products are much cheaper out there.

PS3 games are region free. So you can buy US versions and play them in the UK.
However due to court cases by Sony last year you can NOT import them.
So I think these would be worth buying whilst you're there!
With the exchange rate the way it is and the fact that games are still be released in the US before the UK, there could be some real bargins to be had here.

That's my 2 pence worth...

If you want to bring me some stuff from the kidrobot store in NYC I would pay hansomly

don't buy consoles or games out there.

CD's are fine, as are DVD's if you have a multi regional dvd player.

Clothes are alot cheaper out there (especialy when you work out the price back into Sterling)

Don't forget sales tax at 8.375% on things, and don't go over customs limits. New York trips tend to mean alot of shopping, and most stores will give discounts (Macys/Bloomingdales give 11/12% to visitors by asking in visitors center. Smaller shops it is quite possible to haggle with, especially around canal street, but avoid cards there unless you want to see a whole host of illegal charges appear on your bill.

Pairs of Levi's jeans, they are 1/4 of the price out there

Take the lables off MOST things u get and claim them as ur own. u can bring back alot more that way. have a good time:D

Lucky Charms :d

jeans and ipods

When buying electrical items overseas, just be aware that the guarantees don't usually cover repair in Europe i.e. you'd have to send back the item to the USA for repairs under waranty. This could be costly.
Also, as mentioned by others, be aware that if you bring back more than £145 worth of goods that you've bought over there, you are liable to pay taxes and duties on this on your return to UK. This is 17.5% VAT + import duty (varies - check out ]hmrc.gov.uk for more info)

When i went there thought it was a tad overated and very expensive

I recommend going to century 21 (opposite ground zero) as its bargains galore in there!

Just got back on Sat from NYC- try a day out at Woodbury Common outlet, approx 1hrs drive from city. Get bus from Port Authority Terminal on 42St it costs $39 return. Loads of designer shops all in one location- Well recommended! (Google it for list of shops then visit the ones your interested in). Also if you don't mind being hassled (but not treatened) take a trip to Soho/Chinatown but watch your pockets etc. I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time

 Branded trainers are a good buy & for a proper NYC experience don't miss the Saten Island Ferry - It's free so that's a hot deal .

That should have been Staten Island Ferry before anyone puts me right . We all make mistakes this time of the day Lol.
