What to do about my 'nicked' mobile phone?

Found 16th Nov 2008
Whilst in the local newsagent I left my phone in there. Didn't realise until about 5 hours later. About 1/2 an hour before realising my wife had a 'call' from a man claiming to have met her in a night club a few weeks before (you get the picture). Anyhow I start to put two and two together and am 99.9% certain, given my movements and the accent that the phone was left in the shop and being used by he chap that served me (its a family run shop). The wife spoke to him and gave him what for.

Now do I march down there this morning and give him what for or just forget about it? I don't suppose giving him what for will get it back or that he will admit it, so thinking its not worth the bother? I'm sure the phone would have been used plenty of times, just to annoy the people in the phone book.

i would go and say if you want kids re-aranging your shop every day keep the phone

i would go down and just walk out with a newspaper and other items to match the avlue of the phone every day. Watch him go Under

At least contact your service provider to put a lock on it.

Contact the Police. After you have done everything you can to lock your phone, you should then report it stolen to the police if need be – the number 08701 123 123 is for reporting all stolen phones across all the UK networks

now if were to read a post or get a pm about the shop's address or it's phone number, maybe i could ask several thousand people to ring him up and ask "politely" to return the phone to you.

If you are completely sure you left it there then I would go down, be very polite, tell them you left it there and ask very nicely if they found it. You never know - you might just get it back.

But also - get the phone blocked through your SP

and you no its him who has the mobile how ??? could a customer not of found it see your texts from your wife so adding 2+2 and called your missus, for a start why not block and 2nd if your are seriously sure he has it, why would you ask on a forum and not of gone down the shop and got your phone back ???

Come on, lets do it!

It's a small chance but i'd still try it :

I'd take a 2nd mobile to the shop & take the chance that the 'nicked' phone is actually still there....then phone it to see if it rings or if anyone answers..... !!!

Can't you go back to the shop and just ring your mobile?

Firstly I don't know, but am pretty certain, secondly I don't send texts so it was random that he actually phoned the wife, probably phoned half the phone book. I blocked it after I realised the tea leaf was using it.

The reason I have asked on a forum is to get others opinions, the chances, (based on the conversation the wife had with him) of him admitting to having it are zero. Its a morale questions do I drop it and be more careful next time (and clearly boycott the shop) or go and give it what for purely for my own piece of mind (and to let him know i know - but could there be consequneces). Have phoned the cops, but realistically they are not going to do anything.

You have no proof whatsoever that the shop owner or staff have your phone.

You left it on the counter, anybody could have picked it up.

I would just leave it and be more careful with your next phone.

ok well i take back what i said then, as i thought eh could of read texts etc and seen you had a wife, but the fact you say have no texts etc the chance of geussing she was your wife and ringing her would of been very slim, unless you had her in your phonebook as wife etc lol so from that i would go there and have a quiet word if that fails, **** through his letterbox

Agree - its a quiet shop, not many people go in there, I am pretty certain its him!

I ought to, but I think on reflection I am just not going to bother, will only cause grief in the long run.

yea m8 but you cant let a local shop owner/worker get away with things like this (obviously you have to be 100% sure) or just make out you have a friend in the network who will cell trace your mobile for you

Maybe your phone going missing and the phone call to your wife are completely unconnected. Hmmmm. Hope I'm wrong though.

Nope. They can pinpoint to within 3ft of the phone. FACT.

i like the idea that you go in the shop as you normally do. ask yr wife to come in shortly after (not looking like you're a couple first) then YOU call your own mobile. if it was indeed the shopkeeper, ask him politely for the phone.

if he refuses, she can step in and identify if it was him who called her with "bla bla". polite and factual tone is best.

at this point he'd be so embarassed he'd just give it back maybe even give you a free mag. it's one thing for an 'i'm right you're wrong' ego argument, and another to 'fight' in front of a lady.

if he does return it, thank him politely (not do a show of it) and maintain yr self-respect.

if he doesnt just leave it calmly, and think about getting the police involved.

always the chance the guy on the phone was telling the truth, does the mrs look guilty? is she cooking your fav food?

It's a pity your wife didn't pretend to fall for the caller's line, then arrange to meet him somewhere open and public where you could be twenty foot behind. But if this caller left a number why not contact it? And if you're up for it, tell whoever answers they've won a prize and have to come to a certain place to collect it...

You don't honestly think they would have called and not withheld their number do you?

Getting silly now.

In my experience the police wouldn't have the slightest interest in a 'lost' phone.

Most shops have CCTV. Get the police to meet you at the shop and ask to see the tape for the time that it was lost. Most cops are interested in easy arrests to improve their stats- this should be a doddle. If the owner is guilty I wouldn't be surprised if the owner fessed up.

1. lost phone
2. the mrs got a phone call.
so if the two are linked to the same person (i'm not saying it is) then it's more than just a lost phone.

reporting a lost phone is not a problem, only helps with insurance or getting a new phone. just be careful next time.
if it is more than that, ie if the person who took yr phone knows it's yours and calls yr wife and anyone else harassing them ... then it is a problem.

thanks all, well i haven't gone in yet, b'day parties etc, anyhow, if I ask for the phone its very unlikely that they will just give it to me as the bloke who phoned the missus acknowledged he had the phone (found on the floor), therefore the call to the wife and mobile are connected and I just dread to think how many other females from the phone book he had a go at ringing. the phone won't ring if i go in the shop as its now barred and most likely its been binned or passed on. im thinking im going in for my own piece of mind to eyeball the ****** that has nicked it just to see how much he squirms when i ask him for it, not that he is going to hand it over

not according to here traceamobile.com/ remember this would be a trace using a cell tower so depending on how close it is to a tower would then state how correct a lock it can get, this is the police we are talking about here not an episode of spooks

been into the shop, they denied all knowledge, apparently they had a phone handed in the day after which someone has since collected (not the same make as mine) and they have recently had £200 left in the shop which they held until someone claimed. They had way to many stories to support what hoenst do gooders they are. it was worth it just to eyeball the little **** to let him know I know.

Ok, first go in with a little poster asking if you can put it up in his shop, just a LOST MOBILE poster, stating a £50 reward for safe return!

Im sure you will get it back if they have it, they might get a "friend" to call up though!

You could also go into the shop with your partners phone and call your own phone! they may still have it on!
