Just found out my energy company has my economy 7 rates mixed up

ie paying night rates during the day for the last 3 years

It's their fault and they don't know yet - thought about just leavin' what would you do ?

Can you get a better deal elsewhere? If not stay where you are, they have represented the charges for your electric in a bill to you (of which you have safely filed away) so if they try to claim back what you really owe them you will be able to contest it. The sale and transaction has been made, and your sale contract has been completed. In other words, their cock up, and nowt they can do about it

I would do a little dance and turn all the lights on

Just let them keep charging you less, lucky you!

Just wondering, how did you find out?

Yea, thanks tend to agree -
Getting quite a good deal at the moment with them and not much difference anywhere else - gonna think about tellin 'em - not sure whether they can ask for 12 months backdate though even if it's their fault !

checked the meter , rang in with reading n operator said night usage seemed a bit high but she accepted readings OK !

Checked it out - meter has 2 rates (rate 1 night and rate 2 day) used to be (rate 1 day and rate 2 night ) with my old company so they have just carried on - oh and the meter clock is still on BWT which means it's an hour behind in summer, so for an hour in the morning when the night rate ends it looks like it's recording as it really should !

I would say nothing ... lucky you ... I know someone who cancelled their Tiscali broadband & phone line/calls over a year ago & is still getting it all for free!

You may find when you leave they will discover it on the final read... keep saving the money just in case!

thanks for the comments guys - welcome any other opinions on where I might stand if I tell 'em now !

Must admit done quite well with energy over recent years - British Gas put a new lecky meter in and forgot to switch it on - must have an energy fairy lookin after me !

if it does cause a debt and they've been billing you for more than a year incorrectly your entitled to have anything older than a year w/off. just wondering who supplies you?

I agree.

You need to be careful. A mistake in charging can be reclaimed from you, just as you have the right to seek redress if they have overcharged. Finders Keepers does not apply.

So I would smile, put the money you've saved in Premium Bonds and be ready to redeem them and cough up if they realize their mistake. You never know, you might win a big one in the meantime.

Pretty much what this person says here... they'd only be able to go back and bill you for a years worth of energy at the increased reading.

Your meter technical details are clearly incorrect, it wouldn't take much to put it right and the likelhood is that it won't ring any alarm bells. I'm willing to bet if you transferred to an alternative supplier they'd take your meter details at face value and continue to bill you on the wrong readings.

Don't sweat it... let them find the mistake themselves and if/when they do change supplier and pay off the difference in instalments.

Go this from consumer direct (replaces energywatch)

'There is a back billing code in place which states that the supplier is only able to back date a bill for 12 months '

might think about it for a while then decide what to do!

Eventually, if likely to be discovered, you could ask for a non-Economy 7 tariff and meter. They'd be less likely to check the current meter, I'm guessing, and just swap it out.

Still on Economy 7 here, but my calculations show that I'm paying more for this than if I just had a 24/7 tariff. Advise anyone on Econ 7 to check usage and costs too.

OP,pack your bags, send the family to the in-laws and leave the country!
THEY WILL HUNT YOU DOWN.
