WHAT WOULD YOU DO?? My PS3 has now got the Yellow Light of Death ***FIXED!!!!***

Hello everyone, thank god its Friday...

On Wednesday my PS3 switched itself off mid game, and hasn't come back to life since..
In outside my warranty 2 - year old 40gb console (upgraded to 320gb). So i phoned Sony and its £128 to replace my console, for a refurbished model of the same spec, what a rip off... And its only for a 3month warranty, however I heard on AVforums that you can haggle and get away with a 1 year warranty, which I did after 30 minutes of haggling with a supervisor..

My main problem is that I haven't backed up my data on it since i upgraded the hardrive, over 2 months ago :-( im gutted.... i use play tv, so all my tv, had lots of films and almost a 1000 pics.
Ive read on the net that there is no way to get stuff off my hardrive now, as if i try and place it in an external caddy it will reformat, and if i place it in my new ps3 it will reformat... just double checking if anyone know's any different??

So what would you lot do? Buy a new ps3 slim for £250, i know some one who works in ASDA, so can get 10% off, works out £225. Or go ahead with the £128 replacement?? and then im stuck with 2, 1 good and 1 faulty!!

Thanks for your help, sorry for moaning, just frustrating that i can't do anything but give money to Sony....

I don't know much about PS3's but I think i'd buy a new one as you'd then get a 2 year warranty and you could sell your faulty one to recover some costs

I suppose you are paying £100 extra for an extra years warranty.. hmm - tough choices! :\

think the OP is more concerned about getting all his stuff off his 320GB hard drive

My nephews did this last week so I fixed the YLOD and now its working again. Total cost £0.00

maybe a few pointers as to how to fix it may be more helpful?

why will it re-format it? as far as i'm aware the PS3 uses FAT32, so putting the harddrive in an external caddy and then plugging it into a PC should allow you to pick it up as an external hard drive for you to have a browse in.

not really looked into it, but thats my first thoughts

yeh that would be great if you could explain how you fixed the YLOD?

    - would you buy a new PS3 (its still only a 1 year warranty)
    - any way i can get my content back on my ps3??

I was halfway through typing it when I hit submit by mistake...

I dismantled it, cleaned off the thermal paste then heated the board for 8 minutes to reflow the solder, let it cool for 20 minutes and then reassembled and put some new thermal paste on it. Its working fine now.

The PS3 HD is encrypted and I believe sony also use their own filesystem (not FAT32). So it wouldn't work anywhere other than the original PS3 until someone breaks the encryption.

was expecting at least one post saying Buy an xbox instead :-) thats the way these things seem to work.

Worth a google for PS3 repairs in your local town or maybe on fleabay. Mate got his fixed by some chap he found on Google for 25 notes. If your near B'mth I could point you in the direction

Can't advise on the data on HD issue, sorry

If you want to buy a new one. I'll give you £30 for it and transfer all your data off the harddrive and send you both the harddrive and the data (unencrypted) back.

a local company (east london) can fix my YLOD for £75, however its only a 90 day warranty....
    i hate sony...

Anywhere that will fix it will only give you a max 90 warranty because thats all he fix will last for before it happens again. Its a design and manufacturing fault so it wont go away without some major modification to the PS3.

i think i might fix it myself so i can then back up my data....
and then swap it over for the £128 replacement.
that way i will have my stuff which is really important to me.
    everybody should always back up!!

Can you swap it over after opening the PS3 up? You have to remove the warranty sticker to open the case.

There are ways to grab ure data of the HDD, but unless your quite techy, I would not bother. If you are, look up the Helix live cd (the free version will work fine). There should be plenty of guides on linux for grabbing data from a hdd.

it came on watchdog this and the techies were fixing yellow light of death ps3s outside sony in a van, its very simple and easy to do the way they did it

You wont believe it... i fixed my PS3!! I followed Gilksy1's method on uchoob!
I bought a heat gun (£24 from B&Q - i will return it now i used it, it looks mint), akasa
thermal paste from Maplin £8 and had isopropyl alcohol from a CD cleaner!

I am so pleased, i've backed up all my game saves, all my videos, pics etc.. i've synced my trophies
and iv'e canceled my sony exchange for now so i save £128! hi5...

now i know it is a temporary fix but i am so pleased you wouldn't believe it, i don't loose anything and i will probably trade in my working ps3 for a new slim soon...

any questions feel free to ask me, but Gilksy is the man!!
