What's a good legit site for buying MP3 files?

Now that more record companies are allowing their music to be sold in MP3 format I'm wondering what are the good websites that sell a wide range of MP3 files to UK purchasers.

Isn't iTunes still DRM free?

Thanks for the replies. I want MP3 mainly for its inherent lack of DRM but the ubiquity of support for the format is another major bonus. I appreciate that AAC and other newer formats offer better quality at the same bitrate but they are typically not so well supported especially AAC.

I don’t think they sell MP3 but I’ll look into it. If they do sell high quality DRM free AAC files I can always convert them to MP3 fairly easily so it is an option worth considering.

Here's the official stance:

Here's what I found by searching for ways to convert iTunes stuff to MP3:

convertitunestomp3.org/

hmmm, seems like it may be possible!!

A friend asked me what a good website is for MP3 and he’s not very technical so I figured I’d keep it as simple as possible.
If he buys some iTunes stuff he can always burn it to CD and rip to MP3 anyway but I’d rather steer him towards DRM free music.

The iTunes Plus files are DRM free and a higher bitrate but they also cost more.
I'd rather steer people away from the iTunes Store to support other stores that sell only DRM free music and that don't charge a premium for it.

Unless I'm mistaken, the other major download stores are losing money over download sales. They have needed to undercut the prices on iTunes to grab a share of the market and as such are not making a profit. So you're not paying a premium at all for the songs on iTunes.

In the spirit of deal hunting, have a look on eBay for iTunes vouchers. You find on there, every few weeks or so, vouchers to buy outright for 50-75% of the voucher price. (Enter the voucher code as soon as you get it in case the seller is sneaky.) I've done it before and not had problems - yet, touch wood.

Apple charge a premium if you want to upgrade a DRM track to a non DRM track, that’s what I was referring to. I’m not sure if buying a track that is non DRM costs more if you buy it the first time compared to DRM tracks.

I don’t want to encourage people to use the iTunes store anyway as Apple’s dominance is stifling the market as far as I’m concerned. I have a 160GB iPod Classic and it lacks so many features compared to my ancient Creative Zen Xtra but due to Apple’s dominance the player market seems stagnant.
