Anyone know where you can get the keys reprogrammed on the cheap?

programming depends on the car. ford for instance you can easily do yourself

Why would you want just the case, the metal part is included so you can go to a key shop and have it cut.

On that note does anyone know if they ask for documentation when they reproduce car keys, never tried myself but surely someone could get your keys and reproduce without you knowing. I know when I got house keys done know proof of ownership or permission from landlord was sort.

nope they don't ask for id or your v5. they'll even cut a ford key from just the code which anybody with experience can tell from a glance at the key. some will even copy the programming from an existing key

Guv at least they aren't selling service stamps for cars like I've seen on ebay :x I wouldn't trust any 2nd hand car that wasn't from a main dealer or my advice would be to phone up the garage that is in the service book and check.

Selling uncut keys with radio controls isnt a bit odd?

Can you get the keys cut for your car? Programming is easy?

Hmm. I know cars arent that secure, but this seems a bit dodgy!

That was what I was thinking! (Hence why I posted to ask!)

do you know any info on the VW keys? My 96 golf is supposed to have an immobiliser but I'm damned if there's a transponder on my key no black fob bit embedded in the metal as shown on DX. Could I just get it reproduced without having to worry about the non existent transponder? Girlfriends 2004 Polo has the black fob embedded in the metal definitely has an immobiliser.

    nope its not odd.
your local timpson sell blanks for most cars, and will cut it for you

with the ford programming depends on which version it is but its a simple process involving placing keys into the ignition in a set pattern.

i would think that a 96 VW would have a transponder in the key. i know my 94 ford did. but my personal experience is only with fords (i've coded 2 of my own and about a dozen for friends) and renault.

the transponder is usally embedded in the plastic part of the keyfob. ford have a square at the top of the key either blue or red depending on version. but the newer ones have the remote opening circuit as well so they don't need to embed the transponder

Dunno what a timpson is (but can guess!!!). Well you learn something new every day. I always thought it cost a fortune to get a new key - and you had to prove you were the car owner!

timpsons is a shoe repair and key cutting shop, IIRC they charge about a tenner for a ford key. the only ones who charge a fortune are the dealers.

lumoruk: a quick google found this johnrichard.co.uk/Tra…htm it suggests the golf had a transponder from 95 on

this site automam.net/key…htm shows vw transponder keys that don't show the chip

OMG I got so happy when I started reading this thread - I desperately need a new casing for my Citroen Picasso key!

Unfortunately, they have 5 or 6 Citroen casings but none for me :-(

    Try flea bay.
That's where I got my Peugeot keys from. The buttons had worn out so I just swapped the parts over that I needed and I then had a virtually new key.

Main dealers cost you an arm and a leg.
That's probably why there is a market here then.

Have looked on eBay but looking at £30 for a key so that I can try and change the bodies over - at the moment would rather make do with the black tape contraption OH did for me :giggle:

Citroen told me £120 fo a new key :w00t:!

Well, I work in the trade and I've seen a few cars less than 3 years old that have come from the main dealer, which obviously have a dodgy story to them. One was apparently less than 20k from new but both rear brake discs had been worn down so far that they had worn through the vents sandwiched between the discs on both sides and were only half a disc!
