Hi
I keep seeing cashback, discounts for Amex users. Can any one explain the advantages of getting Amex card over others and if there is an annual payment for getting the card? Does the free card option have any advantages?
Thanks

I was wondering the same. Just got Amex Gold, free for 1st year, £140 fee per year from year 2 onwards. I checked my account online and there are no current offers for me. Not sure how/when you receive offers, it may be that they are very account specific.

I had one a while ago. I found it too much hassle as some shops don't take them and some times they don't work properly and you have to then sign your name on the receipt like the old days, it might be a bit better now Imo not worth the hassle.

Great, I have the £450 a year one. If you travel it's superb, free airport lounges, upgrades at hilton everytime I have got a suite when paid for double room, Amex points, buy house of Fraser vouchers with.

It all down to your circumstances, if you spend a fair bit it is well worth it

I have the Gold (free for first year) which comes with 2 free lounge passes and a wad of points converted into Avios and 10% off Hertz rentals.

I also have the Premium Plus (BA) card, which is £195 a year but comes with a 2-4-1 Avios voucher when you've spent the required amount.

Signing your receipt. How onerous. It takes all of 5 seconds.

The every day American Express card is no annual fee and after the introductory rate 0.5% cashback. Doesn't sound a lot but it is better than nothing!! They do have a few offers for card holders which might be of interest. If you 'opted in' to the Amazon Prime offer and paid with your card you could have got £20 quid off I seem to recall.

It used to be difficult to find anywhere that accepted the card, but not anymore. You can link your card to paypal, ebay and amazon which is handy. All the major supermarkets accept them as do most if not all of the train companies. If your going to have a credit card and will always pay off the outstanding balance then the no annual fee American Express card makes sense.

I got mine via lloyds bank free, still get some perks, air miles/adios, discounts etc... free lounge at airports, reduced rates car hire & a few other offers. have not had it refused anywhere but I've one on conjunction with a visa so got choice of both.
if u pay then u need 2 make sure the offers are worthwhile...
