I know it aint Norton, lol.

Looking to buy one for myself and the father in law.

So multi user obviously an advantage.

I heard NOD32 was quite good. Obviously I want something that doesnt slow the computer down and picks up on everything like spyware and viruses (Norton tends to let a lot through)

Hi,

I work for an IT support company.

Wouldn't recommend Norton or AVG (AVG free is ok for people who want soemthing for free)

Wouldn't hesitate to recommend NOD32 or Kaspersky.

Basically with any AV, it's inevitably going to eat up some amount of operating memory - true some eat more than others, but I generally find with AV loaded, most XP users should have atleast 1gb Ram and Vista/7 users should have atleast 2gb..

True you can obviously run your OS with AV on less than the above but I find for most typical users the above figures keep the machine fast and snappy.

^^ also very good! not too sure how it behaves as a resident protector but use the free version quite a lot for removing malware.

kaspersky - free 30 day trial, then you can buy or you can buy from play - amazon etc, if barclay customer you can get free for up to 3 pc's....i think abbey does similar

which of the 2 should I go for?

What about Avast! Comprehensive, unobtrusive and free.

Not really looking for free, looking for one as a gift.

Kaspersky all the way, you usually find the free ones are free for a reason...

Avg is just as good as any other virus software imo. Also are you with virgin you can get they're software for free. Was an edited version of kaspersky

Computer security is more than just viruses.

So maybe you are looking for an full Internet security product rather than just an anti virus.

PC Pro says Avira Premium security is the best.

With Norton Internet Security and BullGuard Internet Security next best

They review a lot of internet security products here

Malwarebytes is an antivirus program. Malware is malicious software and a virus comes under this. It actually covers more than a standard antivirus program because it covers all malware.

i think eset nod is currently "the best" according to the reviews etc

nodenabler is small program which gets you free licenses and updates them for you auto......

For a bought anti-virus program , I would recommend : Kaspersky or ESSet NOD.For freebys: Comodo Internet Security or Avira . I've noticed recently , ones like AVG can let rootkits on to PC 's whereas Avira is very good at picking this sort of thing up.
So, I would try Avira and see how it goes and a separate firewall like comodo.

I've used Avast for the past 5 years or so now on 4 different computers. I have never had a virus in all that time.

avast.com/

I cannot recommend it enough. And it's FREE!

AVG is the besthttp://free.avg.com/gb-en/homepage

I do hope you are joking. AVG is hopeless these days as can be seen by the amount of threads just on HUKD by people saying they're infected and AVG free failed to stop them.

EDIT: See post 25 for a typical example of AVG in use!

Kaspersky or NOD32 gets my vote.

I'd say just go for a retail boxed version of Norton Internet Security 2010. Its got a virus detection and a firewall in one! It may use up memory but for me it has helped! And it's a common one that people have heard of.

Avast..

Free and excellent! Not had a virus since installed (3 years).

i use avira anti-vir

its a really quick anti-virus, won't slow your pc and really good at finding things

I downloaded MSE to try instead of AVG just to see what it was like...
Ran a scan and found 4 trojans infecting my PC.... byebye AVG!

Also using MBAM to weed out the nasties and CCleaner

Everyone has an opinion, their chosen AV is always the best. Personally I listen to the the experts: av-comparatives.org/.
