Whats the best car polish to use?

Found 23rd Feb 2009
As it says, my car is now about 5 years old and I am stumped as to which polish to use to keep the bodywork looking really nice. I see cars in showrooms and wonder how they get that shine but too shy to ask.

I would prefer easiest application etc but would be interested in such recommendations as elbow grease or electric polisher, spray on with hose or dab with damp cloth.

Many thanks and I may post piccys if it works!

Autoglym super resin if you dont mind using a bit of elbow grease. There are more polishes out there than you can throw a stick at but you cant go wrong with autoglym

+1 on the autoglym
Mer is also a good polish.

The best I've used is Mer... I've had it a long time now and bought it from a market.. It's expensive but very good..

Thanks to all so far - I remember using Mer on my motorcycle a long time ago but had forgotten all about it. Willing to try both to see which works best....:-)

Zymol - smells nice too

Which consumers assoc did a test of car polishes - can't remember which one was best but Mer was rated about average (its what I usually use).......

Collonite 915 - Fantastic stuff and very easy to apply.

AutoExpress recently done a test and Collinite no476S came out tops...haven't tried it myself tho

I go to a car wash to get my Beamer washed. It's a lot easier, a bit more expensive, but IMO it's worth it.

They then polish it after. It looks real good. I'll ask them what polish they use next time I'm down there.

Even though you beamer is second hand and will already have swirl marks etc taking it down the car wash is not the way to look after your car.

Do it yourself using the proper methods and you will get a much better looked after swirl free car.

NEVER USE CAR WASH'S OR A SPONGE (obviously unless your not that bothered)

I don't take my Beamer to a machine car wash, the people wash it by hand. They do a very good job of it. They clean, wax, polish and clean the interior for £10 while I read the paper.

Money well spent IMO.

No no no no no..........

Serious, think of how many cars they do, day in day out, all that dirt on those sponges, clothes or whatever they use? Do you think they dont end up on the floor and get washed out after cleaning round wheel arches and all that? No chance.

Like i say, if you want to try and keep you car swirl free and as close to perfect then DIY is the only way to do it.

Meguiar's Gold Class... or Autoglym.

That is why I got Meguiar's btw...I have a metallic black car and it has given me the BEST results.

Have you heard of or tried Collonite 915 from the USA?

It's fantastic stuff, especially on darker coloured cars.
