What's the best video format & conversion software for streaming to PS3/PSP?

I copied all the kid's DVDs onto my NAS for streaming, to stop all the fingerprints etc.

I used DVD Fab to convert to AVI, but it converts it to H.264 which plays fine through my XBOX media centre, but the PS3 does not support this compression. I've also just bought a PSP and I've not yet managed to convert a film to play on this either.

I did manage to convert an AVI to MP4 and it played through the PS3 but the picture was awful - way too pixelated.

What is the best compatabilty v quality v file size option?
Is there a single format that would play on the PSP and stream through the PS3?
Is there any software that could convert the AVIs I already have into something watchable?

I still have an old style TV so HD is not a huge concern just now, however if it doesn't make a huge difference to file sizes then I'd just as soon convert them to something that will look OK on a HD LCD should we splash out on one anytime soon.

Hi, the ps3 will play mp4 and divx. Not sure about psp , i think it only plays mp4 but i may be wrong. I wouldn't recommend re-converting from h264 file to a mp4 as its far to compressed and really only suitable for ipods.
I would personally re rip the films in to divx or mp4 from the dvds.
as for streaming , I believe a lot of people use twonky.
    Hope i've been of help.
Correct me if i'm wrong anyone?

Thanks for the reply - I was a bit surprised to see all of my films were h264 really. I'd picked DVDFab because it has a really simple interface with options to rip to generic (avi), ps3, psp etc, but the generic and PSP settings seem to compress to h264 with no option.

I ripped one DVD using the PS3 option, but the quality was terrible - really blocky. I haven't played with every single setting, as it would be such a trial and error process for me. I was hoping someone could recommend some software with a friendly GUI that rips to a more universal format and produces something watchable, or advise me on what setting to tweak.

The streaming side is working fairly well. I am streaming using Twonkmedia, and I recently upgraded my NAS firmware so that the PS3 sees what's on there. Prior to the upgrade it would just say "unsupported data" on the menu - now it shows the titles correctly but still won't play the files.

yeah psp plays mp4 it does play avi's
but you need to download a avi player for it
just google "avi player for psp" or "divx player for psp"
but as its homebrew probally will only work on a 1.50 or custom firmware
    but not too sure
    hope this helps
    regards

Have you tried ]PS3 video 9? I downloaded it today but haven't had time to try it yet. It's free to download and is meant to be pretty good.

They also do a version for the PSP too.

TVersity is pretty good for things like this, no need to convert as it streams on the fly

I'm told this works really well if streaming from a PC, and it seems to have helped out alot of people who had media player 11, but it's of no use to me as I'm streaming from a NAS.

I think the Twonkymedia is working well since I upgraded the QNAP firmware, and I'm sure it's just a case of finding either the best settings for DVD rips - or some software that has them as a default for amateurs like me.

it used to be good but no need now that the ps3 plays divx anyway.

Use Rapiz for converting movies to PSP format. Or ImToo PSP converter. Both of these convert and resize to fit PSP, won't be any good for PS3 though.

Do a search, should be able to find the appropiate sites.
