We may need some self employed builders, electricians, plumbers and decorators but what's the best way to find them and we want to avoid cowboys like the plagued. lol

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

One that are registered and are accredited to a scheme.
You then will find their reccomendations:thumbsup:

Also as above

I suppose the only real way is to inspect their work yourself. Maybe visit a job they are on. In my experience the very good guy's cost a fortune and will not move on the price when asked for a quote.
When someone moves on the very first quote they are probably thinking from that point, how can a save money or what corner can i cut.

Do you have any other advice, as I know you're quite clued up on the building trade?

Make sure they speak Polish or Lithuanian?

actually word of mouth needs to be treated with caution re my post, those guys were introduced thru a family member and other friends gave no warning, but then this was slightly off their usual working role.
next time i would insist on seeing other examples of their work and take photos of that to form an expectation of quality

whereabouts do you live?

We signed up to one of those building sites and have got a million quotes from East Europeans and Asians who can't spell, quite worrying that there going to build your stuff.

don't think i'd mind east europeans as the physical problems in their home lands are probably very similar to ours ie climate wear etc
saw some work by a polish carpenter/joiner recently and think it would put many a local boy to shame

Avoid the trade links, find locals that you know will do a good job, ask around.
