Whats the catch with mobile phone insurance?

as the title says what really is the catch as ive got a faulty phone and people are telling me just get mobile phone insurance claim it off that and then cancel the insurance is it really that simple?

most places require you to get a incident reference number from the police. However, a lot of insurers will only replace the phone if it wasn't your fault. i.e. if you dropped it or it was in your pocket and you sat on it, then it WONT be covered. Check smallprint :-)

plus they block the IMEI on your broken phone to make sure its unusable.

thats what i was thinking, but so many people do it and then they recieve a brand new phone in a couple days i was thinking to my self are they that stupid.

that i dont care because i dont want to sell it on i just want it fixed sony are charging £80 rip off.

I lost my phone over Christmas, fell out of my pocket when I got out of my car in a Tesco car park. I cancelled the phone with Orange and they offered to replace the phone, like-for-like for £70 (for a HTC Touch Diamond). So a relatively expensive phone for a fairly small sum.

So before you commit fraud consider just telling your phone company and see how much they want to replace it.

If the phone is faulty - you might be able to get it repaired or replaced under warranty? Whats the fault and how did it happen? (Lots of phones come with 2 year warranty...)

Is it accidental damage or a genuine fault? You must have a fairly good idea yourself...

Most phones have areas which identify if water ingress has taken place, and obviously if its a cracked screen or something they will say accidental damage, but if it just stopped working and hasn't got wet it sounds like a genuine fault...

plus insurance usually charge an excess of 25-50

There will be an excess and you can't just sign up, claim and then cancel. Once you sign up the minimum term will be 12 months.

And, yes, that is fraud. And as I work as a fraud investigator for one of the networks I'd advise against it (but I would, wouldn't I)...

One of my mates did what you are asking, and got his iPhone swapped over (albeit o2 insurance).

But basically, what he did was that he started the insurance and then claimed about 2/3 weeks after his policy started.

He cancelled the next month (ie paid for 2 months)

O2 let you cancel after 2 month and a claim !! They must be losing handsets like their going out of business.

So, okay, If you're on O2 than you're safe. If you're on another network you might have a problem. . .

What a rediculous quote, he is not safe he will be committing FRAUD as … What a rediculous quote, he is not safe he will be committing FRAUD as you stated in a previous post. How do you know he won't be investigated? Plus don't forget the op has just posted on a public forum, detailing his intentions :whistling:

I guess the irony of that statement didn't come through as I wanted it to...

I was not in the least condoning the action.
As I said above I work as a fraud investigator for one of the networks. If he started insurance with us and then claimed a few weeks later we most certainly look VERY closely at his claim.

No problem... There should be a smiley for irony don't you think ?

tbh i dont no how it stopped working, i first found out when i was clearing my draw and i found it and then i noticed a slight dent on the bottom left side of da screen i was thinking to my self how the hell that got there and then turned it and guess what screen stopped working i still dont get how it got damaged and the company i was looking at said i can cancel my policy when ever i want even if i make a claim.

Just from what you've put in the post above I can see how to reject your claim and prove it fraudulent . . .

In my opinion, no company would be able to do anything other than void the insurance on a claim. If you take out the insurance and offer after 1 - 2 months of payment, what can the insurer say.
As has been mentioned, make sure you know how much the excess is, the monthly premium, and have a look around forums to see how reputable the company are (and how likely they are to pay).

I hear that Lloyds Tsb are quite good at that sort of thing, however i'm using the Geek Squad (just got my upgrade and was given a month free).

So you're advocating that the op commits fraud are you ?
    Very responsible.

I work as a fraud investigator with one of the networks, I'm just trying to stop him from getting into trouble.

I just had a contract from carphone warehouse and they give me one month free insurance from qeek squad. So during this month if any happen with my fone m I eligible for making claim. As I will cancel my insurance after one month.
