Have a Santander 1-2-3 accont and stipulation is I need 2 direct debits. I need 1 and quickly so just looking for the cheapest possible.

I had 2 but cancelled an unneeded one as I thought my Netflix account was a direct debit, turns out it isn't.

Why not set up a minimum payment direct debit to 2 credit cards/store cards? No need to actually use the cards so no payments will be taken but will still count as two direct debits

look for a magazine subscription......

sometimes they do 3 mags for £1. These are always DD.

What about this one?

Can you just keep taking out the £1 trials quarterly and it will count?

Lots of charities let you donate by direct debit. Some do have minimum amounts.

So set one up? Walk into any clothes store tomorrow and ask to apply for a store card and they will bite your hand off. Takes just a few minutes.

You might have to do a little research there! Just an idea for you as I know magazine subs are taken by DD.

Exactly! Store cards are normally around 30% APR and only too keen to take your money! Argos/debenhams/new look loads to choose from.

What do I do, just get a store card from anywhere then ring Santander and ask to set up a direct debit on the store card if I ever use them?

Sorry for all the questions, never had store or credit cards before, don't like going into debt or paying for stuff I don't have the money for.

Which is exactly why I said, no need to use the card. Even if you never use it and never make any payments, the direct debit will still count

You don't need to go into debt or pay for any stuff although it is usual to open an account when making a purchase but not essential. You don't even need to ring Santader to set up a direct debit. The store will automatically set up a direct debit for you when you open the account.

Simple, link your Santander account to your PayPal account. PayPal will then set up a Direct Debit on your account. You could then, if you need to actually use the DD buy something cheap on eBay and pay using PayPal.

Just a thought - is the Santander 1-2-3 current account actually a good account for you if you don't have any DD's to setup? E.g. the main perks of the account include cashback on spend for council tax, utility bills etc. Most of these you could pay by DD, is it just you prefer not to? Are you making a good return on interest each month to more than cover the £2 account fee?

For me it's fantastic. I'm using it as a savings account account for my deposit on buying a house. I get my wage paid into my Halifax reward account so receive there £5 a month, then have a standing order across to my 1-2-3 account to the tune of £600 and have my mobile contract and one other direct debit on the Santander. I earn roughly around £24 a month after tax interest and the £2 fee.

It is all dependent upon what DD's you have and how much you have saved though.
