What's the deal with Low Emissions Zone, as my Dad has received a huge fine?

Basically, my Dad has a Short Wheel Based Transit Van, which he uses for work and only last week, he received a letter stating that his van was wrongfully listed as exempt from the fine but they've now realised it actually apparantly is and if he is caught within the zone, he'll receive a warning.

According to the leaflet, vans won't have a problem until October 2010 but he received a notice yesterday morning stating he now has 14 days to pay a £500 fine, otherwise it'll double but he also went through the zone the day before, which will mean he'll receive another fine shortly.

This is outrageous, as he's currently working for £160 a day but will have to pay £500 every time he crosses over, is this actually the case or is something wrong, as the leaflet did state vans are fine for another 2 years?

    Any advice would be appreciated

If you have got ur facts right, then get ur dad to take it up with the ruling authortiy, do a bit more research first aswell wouldnt want them to make u look like an idiot.

These guys are just idiots who try and fine you for breathing near old ladies and giving then flu.

He can check if his vehicle is effected ]here

He needs to register either way ]here

I thought it was from 2010 anyway but it all depends on his vehicle, the daily charge is less than £500 anyway, that's just a penalty fine rather than the daily rate

From what I saw on the leaflet, it should only effect lorries and mini buses before 2010, so I'm very surprised to see he has even received the fine.

The daily fine is supposed to be £200 per day but he's already received a bill stating he must pay £500.

Saying he's not happy is putting it mildly but I'll checkout the links in a sec.

    Thanks for that.

    No problems

My understanding is that it only effect vehicles over 3.5 tonnes at the moment, I think he still needs to be registered though so that he doesn't have to pay.

The daily rate is £200 the fine for not paying is £500

I'm not surprised he's not happy really, it's a bit of a joke the whole lez thing

Does anyone have a number that I can call to sort things out, as the letter wants me to call an 0845 number, which I can imagine costing a bomb over my dads mobile?

Thanks for that FC but are you sure that's the number for the DVLA, as that sounds like a private number in London?

Cheers guys, really appreciate that, I'll call them tomorrow morning and get this sorted out.

Rep left for FC, TitChimp, Shengis and RedIron.

Just to let everyone know, I've cleared it up with LEZ and it seems they thought the vehicle was overweight at 3.5 tonnes or over, when the van is actually weighing in at 2.6 tonnes.

If anyone has the same problem, make sure they check the details and just send them proof via the logbook or taking a pic of the details, which you could find under the seat on the passenger side.

Thanks again to everyone that helped. :-D
