    What's to stop me....

I've been looking to book driving lessons for my step mother.

AA currently have an offer on for half price lessons. Having read the small print it states that it's for the first lesson only. Lessons are bookable online, so in theory I could book multiple lessons on the offer.

But - I'm not sure what the AA would do about it - cancel the bookings or not even notice them at all. A friend told me that instructors are salaried for firms like the AA and so the instructor themselves would not lose out. Does anybody know that for sure? I don't want to mess with anyone's income.

Lessons are so bloody expensive now - £27 an hour.

    Is it worth a punt?

Given that you'd have to give the driver number from your stepmother's license, that would put an instant stop to abuse of the offer.

I haven't gone through all of the booking process, but so far it doesn't seem to ask for such specific details.

Obviously they would realise the same woman was seeing them every week. The bookings are made online and how much would they really care if their salary was unaffected? All of the bookings would be paid for.

Seems ppl are thinking it's not a good idea then.

because you are paying or not paying the AA, it isnt the drivers that are giving the lessons free, so AA would know the lessons aren t being paid for

Not seen any for as little as |£15-£20 and i live in Surrey.
Was looking for my son and girlfriend but as the OP says, they're going for nearer £30 a lesson!

The AA would be receiving a payment. They charge for one hour instead of two for a 2 hour slot. They wouldn't be not getting paid at all.

Seems like the general opinion is negative and speculative. The only way to find out would be to book it, but I wouldn't feel comfortable chancing it unless I knew an instructor's income would not be affected.

Buy in blocks ... my girlfriend is paying £170 for 10 hours (first 2 hours were free).

As it's an automated booking system online that is paid for when booking. The instructor would not be handling or even discussing payments with the learner. It would be a case of how vigilant AA are regarding bookings or their system's flagging procedure.

but it will show on their paperwork, i know it has nothing to do with the drivers, but it will be picked up by AA, just because its automated doesnt mean it doesnt get looked at

one way to find out, have a go, pretty embarrassing for your mum, should their be some comeback

Just ring up a local company and ask for a deal.....

    Simple

If you have someone like the AA do you get assigned an instructor that stays the same till you pass?

The instructor might teach you the wrong stuff to get their own back, you might fail the test, or worse still die in an accident because you were taught the wrong thing. Still, you saved a few quid on the lessons right?

    Every cloud!

So the instructor would prefer to kill/harm you and have a fail against their name because their employer missed out on a bit of cash? I'd hate to see you overcharged at the supermarket!:-D

It's not for me but my stepmother. Also - she's also going to be having only a few hours to help her get out of bad habits as she's been driving with different members of the family on a weekly basis for a couple of years but has finally decided to do her test. And yes, she's fully insured as a learner driver.

Thanks, nice finds. But none cover West London. :x

No instructors are salaried as they are all self-employed. The company takes the bookings but the money is put against the instructor's account and he/she has to pay the company a franchise fee every week based on the number of hours they have taught / no of new pupils introduced by the company, depending on which franchise set-up they have signed up to. Therefore if the instructor is charged for each new pupil, as per the AA franchise, they will pay each time your stepmum takes one of these lessons - so yes their income will be affected !

Dont scrimp on paying for lessons as they are the only thing that will give her the skills and knowledge to keep her safe on our dangerous roads - a cheap instructor is one who is desperate for work because they cannot get enough recommendations from previous or current pupils to keep them going - ie they are NOT a good instructor, or they are a new instructor trying to set up in competition to established instructors and will therefore have no experience and their skill at teaching will be untested - they may be ok or they may be abysmal - dont take the chance.

OP how far would you have to travel out of West London to get these prices and would it be viable / economical?

Thanks. Wanted to know for sure. I have no problem in admitting I will chance my look like most on here would (even if they wouldn't admit it) but I really don't want to mess with anyone's income. Booked through another company now anyhow.

It would be a bit of a distance. Wouldn't have worked out as she has my baby siblings and a part time job.
