    what's wrong with my car?

Just thought i would try and get some advice i have a t reg volvo v70 estate, the problem is when i go over and uneven road surface the back of the the car seems to knock rattle and bounce about, i'm thinking suspension or shock absorbers but how would i know which one and where would i go to get it checked without paying a fortune (please don't send me in the direction of kwik fits lol) any one with advice would be greatly appreciate, i have pushed on the back and it does bounce up and sown quite a bit and i have booked it in for a free 15 point check at nationwide autos but i don't even know if they check that. Also if it is one of these problems what sort of cost am i looking at. Thanks

my dad had something similar to your problem. It ended up needing new tires as his old ones were uneven. If not that it would be whell baring.

so you dont think its shocks or suspension then?

well no but i will check it out anyway. What happened on my dads car is that the inside of the tireswhere all bumpy and uneven. He than replaced the tires now it doesnt make a knocking noise.

i've not long had 3 new tyres 1 about a month ago and the other 2 where this year aswell

Shocks, bushes? You could take it for an mot if it's due sometime soon?

    mot not due till november

tyres ? knocking noise? what a load of tosh!
sounds like something in rear suspension , maybe rear antiroll bar links or springs maybe , best take it to a garage to check.,

Bushes sounds like a good place to start, unfortunately it's one of those things that wouldn't normally get picked up...

Some independant garages by me do a pre-mot check, if it's due in november, maybe it's worth getting one of those done (yellow pages and a bit of calling around) that way you also won't potentially get stung at MOT time and can get repairs done over a few months

I doubt very much if it has anything to do with tyres.

Get the suspension checked out at a garage, but stipulate you are looking for a free quote.
See what you get and post back.
But do it sooner rather than later.

Another vote for "lol at the nutter who reckons its tyres ahhahahahaha" from me.

Suspension somewhere along the line I'd think. Could be a collapsed wheel bearing but you'd have more problems than the noise you are Describing

Shock absorbers sounds like for sure, or bushes. Try lifting/rocking the rear around the wheel arch and listen for any creaking/grinding. Also, if it is the shocks, worth replacing both rather than just the one for balance and reliability. Not cheap though, expect to pay £80-100 with vat per shock. If they haven't been done before, not unusual for 12 yr old car to need them changing.

    It is the shocks...................

go to the back of the car and on the left side 1st push down hard...................if it returns to the same spot instantly then the shock if fine on that side........................now try the right................again if it goes back to the same spot right away its fine..........................but by the sounds of your description its 99% the shock.

You will have to get both sides done anyway.

I find nationwide (not a building society) to be best if you have a branch near you. kwikfit are always to expensive.

    Hope that helps.....

I think it's probably one of the rear doors. Check that they are all closed properly. If they are and it's still making the noise then it's likely you have run over a child and the knocking noise if the bones of his skellington rattling against the chassis. Also this will mean your oil is now haunted

He means without it bouncing up and down a few times first.

Correct.................it should go back to level without bouncing 2 or 3 times.

    Should have said that...............Cheers

Erm... change a bulb? I know it seems daft when both don't work, but I once got towed home because I had no front lights.... breakdown guy was a **** and wouldn't try changing a bulb. Turns out both bulbs had gone. Bad times eh.

I'd ask for a second opinion of the suspension thing. The 15 point check style check are just an excuse to sell you other stuff.

but if i needed the suspension done they would have got money out of me that way? Also i have 3 break lights he said ist very unlikely for all 3 to go at the same time. Where would i go to get the suspension checked for free again

Best bet is to find a Volvo owners club online (should be esy to find) register which is usually free and post a question there.

You will be suprised at the response you get.

ok, too far from you , I could have had it in the workshop & had a look (for free), most garages will do a free check for you, but if they cant find anything wrong then they cant really advise you on the possible cause. Try another garage (independent or recommendation from a friend) It does sound like the brake light switch gone faulty, if you know someone thats pretty handy its not too bad a job to change.

appreciate the offer, I don't really know of any garages i'm just so scared of being ripped off which happened on my last car, why would nationwide say my suspension was fine if it's not. Do you have any idea of the cost involved in the brake light switch if a garage was to do it.

you should be able to buy an aftermarket brake light switch from your local motor factors or halfords, you could then ask a garage (when you find a decent one) to fit it for you, it shouldnt cost you more then £10ish for them to fit it.
