What's wrong with my external hard drive? is it failing?

Just plugged in my seagate expansion external hard drive into my TV to find all of my files have mysteriously disappeared?

I also copied some new movie files over to the hd and tried playing them and the hd keeps losing connection to the TV?

Is there anyway to diagnose whether my hard drive is actually failing or way to retrieve my lost data??

    Thanks in advance

Plug it into a PC or laptop and run a drive utility on it... Lots available

My husband says try installing 'HD Tune' (freeware) and run tests, which will give you detailed information on the health of your hard disk. Hope this helps.

Have you had it plugged into the TV before?
I know on my panny TV if I use an external drive it won't read it until the TV formats it, although sticks etc are ok.

If the drive is NTFS format rather than FAT32 the TV is unlikely to recognise it.Check on a PC

Does the drive have a power supply or is it powered via USB?

If the latter the TV's port may not be supplying enough power to it.

I have plugged it in before and it was perfectly fine until recently.

OK. Then I agree with the insufficient power suggestion

I'm going try using the suggested software to diagnose my hd later later, but for now I'll make do with my 16gb usb stick.

    Thanks to all that replied.

if it was switched off whilst stuff was copying to it then you may need to run scandisk

Power off the tv - power back on then try another usb thumb drive to see if that works - sometimes the internal drivers on tv's fail just like they do on a pc (with a pc you need to remove the usb device - remove the driver for that same device and reboot then reconnect to allow the usb device to be re-recognised)

but you might want to check the device is still ok on a pc

Try a different lead as its usb powered, you only need a slightly iffy connection for them to fail.
