Don't worry, it's a non-violent educational project. No living creatures will be harmed, although the process of working through delusions may be mentally painful for some

As are many other major religions

I've read the background of it and it does seem silly that people would believe in it knowing what L Ron Hubbard said

Are you suggesting because something calls itself a religion it should be immune to criticism? A very dangerous path to follow... (national socialism etc...)

Precisely. It's even on the list above. The 'special pass' has always been theists' cultural trump card, which makes it a fantastic project for political leaders to align themselves with.

I didn't read it that way! I think that all theories and isms should be open to ctiticism. When an organisation closes in on itself it usually becomes militant. This has been true both in the religious and political world. My beliefs have been criticized on here in the past, but I'm stronger for it as a person. I do not believe though that a person should ridicule someone else for the beliefs they hold, i.e. character assasination. As soon as it gets into a slanging match it is simply a sign that half-wits are engaged in discoursing about things they known and understand little of.

I agree that ridicule is not always the best answer, although it does have a place in the debate. Some ideas are ludicrous and deserving of this kind of attention, but only if it's done in a way that intends to hold a concept up to rational inspection. These guys discuss this very issue on the first video link on this site newatheists.org/

EDIT: I should add of course that it is the ideas that should be open to ridicule rather than the people who hold them.

This is a discussion about Scientology though - which is now and always has been a money generating scam which earns its 'leaders' sizable funds by guilt-tripping gullible, less-intelligent members with a completely moronic and farcical set of 'beliefs'. Its a complete fraud!

Ok. I get your point, but we don't always know enough about the people we are dealing with, this is especially true with those in forums. People might hold to views that we don't agree with, but they might have emotional problems too, so in ridiculing them we might send them over the edge. I realise that such a situation might be rare, but I would not want it on my conscience. Debate the issue, but not the supposed intelliegence of the person adhering to it. I don't think it is wise to call someone a "stupid idiot" for example. The one who does that has usually lost the arguement in my opinion.

Edit: Liddle, just saw your edit. I agree :)

I think that some have done this, but who gives them any credit? If anyone deserves to be belittled it is those who belittle the person holding the belief instead of intelligently debating it.

I have learned to walk away from wild dogs who can do nothing but snarl and gnash their teeth. You know the saying, An empty vessel makes the most sound!

I don't mind my belief being debated and scrutinised, but I don't take to kindly to people trying to make me look foolish. Debate, as far as I am concerned, is healthy.

I am open minded enough to talk about other people's views, but not enough to let my brains fall out.

That's pretty shocking then. I know people can be sold an idea which allows them to suspend critical thought and block out a mountain of contradictory evidence, but at least with established religions there are hundreds of years of cultural practices behind them.

It doesn't surprise me at all that so many people adhere to their religious faith through an entire lifetime, but how the hell do you sell this story to them?! I mean Tom Cruise appears to have some degree of intelligence and he wasn't born into this faith. What's the deal with him and the other big 'stars' and Scientology? Do they also have some material benefit it???

but to some this is a religion, you have to keep that in mind. If Scientlogy being a 'religion' can be attacked, then ALL religions are equally open to attack. So attacking this is no different to attacking Islam/Christianity/Etc
