Where can I find a cheap hard drive for a laptop PLUS Can I install it myself?

Dropped my laptop yesterday and it seems the hardrive has been damged.I need a new one.Does anyone know where I can find a reasonably priced one min 100 gig.

Also how easy is it to install, I would like to do it myself. Has anyone done it ?

Your advice/tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

It just slides in:whistling:

Pretty easy to change the HDD in a laptop - Usually you can access it on the side of the laptop, just need to take a screw or 2 out to take the panel off, then depending on the model, you can just pull it out and switch it - They slide in, and you don't have to connect anything to them lol.

Consult your manual if you're not sure where the HDD actually is on it.

Before you order a new one. The old one may have just jolted loose inside the housing.

Maybe... But it's an easy enough job :P

What makes you think the hard drive is faulty? Which make/model laptop is it?

As they say, getting the new hard disk in is pretty straight forward. If you take the old one out and Google the part number (try all the numbers you see on the labels) you should be able to find out the drive type and spec and order a new one accordingly. Try and back up your files and photos (USB mem stick or external hard disk) first though and don't throw away the "faulty" one just in case.

Once the new disk is in, then the fun starts and you'll have to rebuild so you'll need the recovery CD that came with it...which I'm sure you've still got !

Once you have windows installed you need to :
1) Connect to your router for internet access
2) Install your Anti-virus & Firewall and update ASAP
3) Run Windows updates (from Tools menu in Internet Explorer)
4) Restore your files/photos etc
4) Connect peripherals - printer, camera etc

Mail me if you neeed any more help - I used to do this stuff for a living

Thank you so much but ...i didn't make the recovery C.D  I know its the first thing you should do but i kept postponing it next thing the laptop falls and i discover it been well over a year since i bought it lol. where can i get one? or should i be thinking of buying Windows Vista OS?

Just remember it will need to be a 2.5" size and you will have to reinstall windows on it. You can just download the current operating software and use the serial key beneath the laptop.

Laptop harddrives are very simple to install. If you cannot do it yourself, there are a few tutorials:

Also, for the actual hard drive, im pretty sure you can find something on eBay.

Can't find any service manuals or decent pictures for the laptop. If you want to know exactly where the hard drive is localted/which screws to remove you will have to post some close up pics (sides & bottom).

]There's someone on eBay selling a X59P, may be they would be willing to make you a set of recovery CDs?

Good shout. I got some recovery disks off an ebayer once for a friends laptop, just bunged him a fiver via Paypal Sure you haven't got any CDs that came with it ?If not, Vista (Home Premium) would be a good choice but could be expensive and you'd need 2Gb RAM ideally. I love Vista but there's plenty of people that don't on here ! Do the sums - new disk, Vista, more RAM - might be worth getting a new system and selling yours as is :?

Re the hard disk, I wouldn't buy of ebay. Best to go to a decent company like novatech (www.novatech.com). Tell them what you've got an they'll sort you out.

Hmm, that's an odd diagnosis. Windows is entirely contained on the hard disk so the hard drive must be working partially if it's loading, if the hard disk didn't work at all you'd get a system disk not found error on the first screen almost as soon as you started your laptop.

Random crashing/restarts especially on startup are usually signs of a bad CPU or bad memory, I suppose a hard drive could be responsible but it's not the first thing I'd suspect. However, if you're confident in your friend's knowledge then he's the one to trust as he's had the actual laptop in front of him.

If you do want to double check then one thing you could do is download a Linux Live CD (like ]Ubuntu) and burn and run that, it runs entirely from the CD (and doesn't save anything on your computer) so if that works fine then it could be the hard drive, but if that crashes as well then I'd ask your friend if he's sure.

That actually makes sense.Might have to do that first then take it from there insted ig buying the hard derive etc now.Thank you

That's good advice to try a linux live CD. Alternatively you could download Hiren's bootCD and boot to that, then try the pc testing programs that it contains.

A long shot this but have you run chkdsk?

It's certainly worth a try it if not....might be just a boot file that's corrupt
