Where can I recycle a laptop battery?

The battery life on my laptop recently suddenly declined to about 5-10 minutes, so I replaced it, however now I'm not sure what to do with the old one.

Being environmentally concious, I'm aware that I'm not supposed to just chuck it in the bin, but despite the recycling icon on it, I don't think I can just put it in my household recycling either (can I?).

From Googling, I've seen that Tesco recycle laptop batteries - but only at certain stores. They haven't had it easy to find out which ones, but a list I eventually managed to find doesn't contain any of my local ones.

Are there any other places I can take it? Any other chains of store (PC World perhaps?) that would take it? Or any online services where I could just post it off?

I think you can recycle at some Post offices. I am sure I have seen the bins for these with the ones for normal batteries. If not just stick it in that one!

That's a good shout, I'll check next time I'm in the Post Office, or I might just start carrying the battery around with me in case I see a place!

Most supermarkets have battery recycling points as well as many DIY stores. I've seen laptop batteries in the battery bins at B&Q.

Currys or PC World do free computer battery & hardware recycling.

    Local council tip.

i re-use old laptop batteries the cells inside them are 18650 cells and fit my e-cig or you can buy torches and head torches that take them you can also buy chargers cheap to charge the individual cells and you can buy a battery pack to put them in aswell that will make them into a portable phone charger always handy to have

Depending on the model of laptop you might want to just keep the old battery for when you are using the laptop on the mains as a lot of laptops dont sit right without the battery inserted. The reason I suggest this is that when the machine is on a desk charging from the mains that it is not good for the battery to sit there doing this all the time. So if you use the dead battery when you don't need portability and swap to the good battery when you do you will get the best of both worlds and have a good battery that will last a lot longer because it's not been used as much.

    Burn it.

    Much more responsible...

I thought the place that sold you the new one has to give you away of disposing of the old one?

    Lol, why?

Edit: why have I just responded to a recently resurrected topic? Schoolboy error.

I think he actually just threw it in a river as today seems quite warm, probably down to how he got rid of that battery

It's been so long since I posted this I can't even remember what I did with the battery! I think I put it on ebay as faulty.

You don't have to throw the whole unit out, Just change the battery's assuming its not sealed.

Yes I know you can crack it apart and attempt a DIY hack, but you said change the battery assuming it is not sealed.

I have never seen any battery packs that are not sealed, or for that matter off the bat designed to be user interchangeable with fresh batteries, which is what I assumed from your post!
