Found 5th May
Hi I have a Carrera subway 2 and I'm newbie and I would like some help please.

I broke the rear gear shifter and need to buy a replacement which doesn't cost me more than the bike please, not sure where's the best place to buy it and it would be beneficial if anywhere might fit it for free if buying from them but not mandatory.

Thank you.

try woollyhat shop , they tend to sell surrplus stock cheap . I dunno if they do a shifter compatible with your partic setup

woollyhatshop.com/

Just looked at your bike spec and they use Shimano Altus shifters, . Look on amazon plenty under £20.
As for fitting, try doing it yourself if you want to learn. Plenty how to vids on youtube etc.
I taught myself and completely changed everything but the frame on my Carrera.

Thanks guys I'm not sure which one I need, I have 2 metal circular gears at the front and 10 on the rear so 2x10. I cannot find a shifter for 2 speed only 3 speed. Is this the right one?

What year is your bike as the spec I looked at showed 3 x 8 unless someone has already changed your crank set.
Can you upload a pic maybe?

I cannot see how many shifts I can do on the rear shifter becuase it's broken so I'm going by the metal round thing. It's has two near the pedals and 8 on the rear wheel. I could take picture if you still need to see it?

If its the rear you have broken then its the 8 speed you need like this one but again thats based on the spec being Shimano Altus . Does it say Shimano Altus on your equipment? amazon.co.uk/Shi…tus

Ok, Is it the Shifter ( the gear changer on the handlebar) that you have broken, or the rear Derailleur ( gear mechanism ) on the back of the bike . ?

Hi stupid hotukdeals not posting comments. I will type it again have to recheck it now.

It's the shifter

if its the handlebar shifter is it built into the brake lever, or standalone.
my brothers trek is all combined so you may need to set up the brake.

Hi it's not joined with the brake, it's separate, I can take it off without taking the brake off. Its the shifter on the handle bar, left hand side. Which has the lowest number of speeds. Ty

I cannot find spec on an Sram X7 rear derailleur that is 8 speed, Usually 7 or 9 speed. However there is an 8 speed Sram x4 which is the newer version of the SX4. amazon.co.uk/Sra…+x4
generally you can mix n match between new and older models but you really need to know exactly what it is you have to check compatibility .

If its the lowest speed shifter then that is a front shifter not a rear shifter you previously stated .If thats the case then it will be a 2 speed.

Ok, unless you overhaul it, you are going to throw money away as it wont be long before something else goes on it due to the rusty unloved condition something will more than likely seize up and could be potentially dangerous.
A new chain and oil is a good start but judging by the bikes condition the brakes should also be inspected.
I cant find a cheap 2 speed shifter on Amazon so ebay may be your best bet but unless you think you can change the chain yourself then you will be better going to a local bike shop, Halfords if you have no choice and getting a quote to sort it all out for you.
Have a look on youtube for how to videos and take it from there, obviously you will also need to factor in some bike tools if doing it yourself.

As an Sram X4 was already being used then its quite likely it will work but I cant guarantee it . You can usually combine the X range, ie X5 crankset with X7 or X9 shifters.

Original Poster

Thank you very much I'll look Into it.

The sram stuff is probably better than the original shimano.
Although I notice that the front is a mix of the two.

replace that chain - its dead (and too long)

What is actually the problem - your pics dont show anything actually broken that I can see. It might just need adjusting/setting up. Frankly I'd not expect the front or rear shifters to work properly with that chain.

You'll also almost certainly end up having to replace the cables (inner and outer) + ferules

The inside of the shifter is kaput, springs etc missing or broken.
