Where to stay in Southern Lake District?

Having never been to the Lake District I'm thinking of surprising my wife with a few days away there over the Easter holidays. Ambleside is about 4 hours away from here, so wouldn't fancy going much further.

Anybody have any recommendations of nice places to stay? whilst still being reasonably priced!! My daughter will be about 9 months, which is something I obviously need to think about!

Mainly going to do a bit of walking, bit of relaxing and a lot of photography

Ive stayed in Grange-over-Sands which is nice.

Keswick.... probably another 45 mins on to journey, if coming from the south, but a nice drive over kirkstone pass, some great views and Keswick is a lovely place.

I only do camping when I go to the Lakes...quick weekend away as it's only an hour's drive for me....I like Coniston but there are loads of nice places...Ambleside is lovely but does get very busy and I doubt it will be cheap.

Here is a link to some cottages you can stay in with offers for the easter may be something to consider rather than a hotel etc ]http//ww…htm

Wherever you decide i am sure you will have a lovely time

Thanks, I work at a college and i think our first week of holiday is the second week of everyone else's. Don;t mind going Mon-Wed or something like that and thought i might get a bargain, if such a thing exists there!!

Not sure we're up for camping yet, we're planning on camping in the summer in Cornwall, and might have a 'practise' trip beforehand, but somewhere closer to home!!

Will have a look at all suggested above, thanks

No dud places to stay in Lakedistrict although Ambleside is one if its particular jewels.
This looks nice although never been.

Bowness on Windermere is an ok town & base. Keswick is also a nice place with some good hill walking right above Derwent water.

This is quite a good place to stay:-…spx

It is near grange over sands.

keep out of the lakes, far too busy over easter. head into the dales, fantastic walking and villages. sedbergh is the gateway from the m6, only 15 miles to windermere in the lakes or 15 miles to Hawes travelling into the dales

Grange is ok but really a retirement town. can recommend the Netherwood hotel if you do choose to go there.
