I downloaded Avast about a month ago and now I am getting a message saying that my trial period is nearly finished, why is this, please - I thought it was free?

you need to register on the avast site. they'll email you the key code.

I use PC Tools free antivirus. No complaints.

EDIT: I also use PC Tools free Firewall.

Avast is best..... you need to register your free copy after valuation period...... this is also free....

    better than AVG

go for avast - also dont forget the firewall e.g. zonealarm

Maybe you downloaded the pro version?

    Home edition is ]free

i use avg with ad-aware (aniversary edition) + zonealarm.

    Feels quite secure.

I used to use all the freebie security stuff but am a convert to Kaspersky Internet Security just got mine from ebay £13.xx for a three PC set-up fully legit and sealed (its the 2009 version but the licence allows use of the 2010 version), so at less than a fiver a year per PC I feel is good, its not a resource hog either which I find with running seperate elements of PC security.

I use the beta version of Kaspesrsky on my main pc with Windows 7 RC, it's free:)

All recommendations so far a good choices.
Just avoid Norton at all costs.

    Agreed!

norton 360 v3.0 is pretty good actually. very light on resources.
you cannot beat Eset products tho.

if you value your computer as an investment. dont fill it up with crap like AVG.

pay for a decent security and benefit from it.

free AV are free for a reason.....

cant go wrong with comodo all in one antivirus and firewall,

    avira or avast

anything except AVG which is useless now

people think its great until they find they've had a virus going undetected for yonks!

    The truth about AVG:

AVG detection rate only 82% this is very poor.
AVG stands for Anti Virus Guard however AVG does not guard
AVG fails a simple virus test namely this one:
    ]http//ww…il…
AVG 8 eats memory this will slow down your PC.
AVG is well known for missing viruses because of it poor detection rate.

is avg free the best antivirus software to have on my computer at home? NO

Both Free Avast or Free Avira are better, if you look at detection rates Free Avast 86%, Free Avira over 94%, both free Avast & Free Avira guard, both free Avast & Free Avira pass the virus test, both free Avast & Free Avira use less memory than AVG.

At moment we using AVG free, don't have any problems with it,am running XP,but my friend who got Vista been having bother and she says its AVG conflicting.

Had Nortons in past but does take up a lot and slows down computer I reckon.

the reason you dont have any problem with AVG is because it doesnt find viruses very well so you are led into a false sense of security

it also hogs memory big time

Agreed. I don't know why people like it so much. It took me nearly 4 hours to scan my hard drive whilst using 30% of the CPU and it refused to accept that some of my game trainers were legit. I've already tried Mcafee, Avast, Avira and F-PROT. Avast would have been the best if it had not conflicted with my trackpad's driver which disabled the cursor when I tried to scroll. According to one other forum thread it is a known issue! In the end just get a mac. :-D
