Which currency should I take to Cyprus? Also, best place to buy foreign currency?

Hiya.

Am going to Cyprus next week. Apparently they use either Turkish Lira or Cypriot pounds, anyone know which I should take? Some places also accept Euros.

Also, where's the best place to buy currency from - Was thinking the Post Office but they don't have Cypriot Pounds on their website.

Thanks all x

Oh, and it looks like Cyprus uses Euros not Cypriot pounds.

EDIT: Yes, you need Euros ' The Cyprus pound was replaced by the euro as official currency of the Republic of Cyprus on 1 January 2008'

yeah, North cyprus is illegally occupied by Turkey so you'll need turkish Lira

been loads of times to the south but wouldnt ever go to the north

budget around £100 per day for 2 adults/2 children for food/soft drinks.

really expensive now

We have a wedding to attend! Thankfully there are 73 of us going over so there will be no need to leave the complex. Our hotel has its own nightclub etc so with there being so many of us we certainly wont have to go to Ayia Napa!

I can only emphacice the need to take lots of Euro's with you. Its the most expensive place in the Eurozone I've been.

Mate your missing out, Ayai Napa is phenomenal, i know the DJ in the one of the biggest clubs too hahaha

As others have said, its defo the Turkish Lira you need.

Turkish Lira for the North. Its cheaper to exchange when you get there. There's ATMs in Kyrenia & Famagusta as well as banks and exchange bureaux. I'd just take a small amount of Lira with you and exchange whatever you need while you're there. I've been to both North and South Cyprus many times and enjoy both. The North is much quieter and much much cheaper than the South. If it's DJs and clubs you're looking for, you've gone to the wrong place!

Cyprus is ace!!!! Went to Paphos and Ayia Napa. The former is nice for a peaceful family holiday, the latter not so much X)

Thanks you so much, very useful info.
We are actually going to Kyrenia for a little family holiday with the kids so sounds like we've definitely picked the right place.
I assumed it would be cheaper to exchange in the UK, so you have helped me with that, With the banks though, don't they charge a lot for using your card abroad? I am with Halifax, will try have a look on their websit eif it says anything about using ATM's abroad
Am also glad to see someone saying it's cheaper North than South because I definitely wasn't planning on taking £100 a day

Forgot to say - Don't change your money at the airport as the rate is very poor there.. Have a look at cyprus44.com and cyprus44.com/for…asp in particular for more info.

If you can, I'd recommend hiring a car over there as it's reasonably cheap and driving is on the left, the same as in the UK.

Cool, thank you.
We have got 2 days car rental included, will consider doing extra if it's good. The hotel does buses to the beach anyways and I wouldn't mind having a break from driving but will see when we get there.
Didn't know they drive on the left, you can see how much research I've done on the bl**dy place, eh? Thanks for telling me

Most debit cards are terrible for overseas withdrawals, especially the Halifax

http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-travel-money#hell

surprisingly, one of the best cards is the HALIFAX CLARITY card so get one of those.

and always request withdrawal conversion in the local currency rather than pounds otherwise the ATM Bank will do the conversion for you to pounds and give you a very bad exchange rate
