    Which netbook?

Need help as I'm not sure which is best out of these two Dell netbooks, also looking at the Acer D250 or the Asus Eee 1005HA, any advice much appreciated. Was mainly looking for something with long battery life.

My suggestion would be to stay away from Acer but that's based upon my personal experience with them, with helping out friends and customers with Acer branded laptops & netbooks.

Not sure what your budget is but there are several deals listed here on HUKD - you mentioned a Dell Mini 1012 and listed below is a deal I found last week, which has a larger hard drive, better webcam, bluetooth included and also a six cell battery.

HotUKDeals - eXpansys - £199.99p (Possible 3% Cashback via Quidco or TopCashBack) - Open Box Dell Mini 1012 Netbook, 6 Cell Battery, Windows 7 Starter Edition, Bluetooth, 1.3MP Webcam, Multiple Colour Options £199.99 @ Expansys

Yes I think I've ruled Acer out, was looking more towards the Asus Eee 1005HA but it has the N270 processor so now looking at the Asus Eee 1005P which is the N450 processor - I'm assuming the N450 is better?

Any idea how the Asus Eee 1005P compares to Dell Mini 1012?

What condition do the open box ones come in? Is the box likely to be damaged as it's for a Birthday present

The newer Intel Atom CPUs are meant to be better in terms of power performance and the underlying hardware.

I can't answer that one (you would need to contact eXpansys to confirm) but generally most open box hardware (from the companies I've previously purchased) comes through okay and will generally have notes on them to show whether the packaging is damaged.
