The optiplex has much better specs, I wouldn't touch the vostro- running vista on a pentium dual-core and only 1GB of memory is likely to be somewhat sluggish.

There seem to be good and bad points for both systems:
Vostro good points:DVD Rewriter drive (standard now),
Vostro bad points: old dual-core Pentium CPU and smaller cache (only 1MB), only 1GB RAM which is minimum needed for Vista.
Optiplex good points: new Core2Duo CPU is more efficient (has 2MB cache too), 2GB RAM
Optiplex bad points: only a CD-Rewriter DVD combi drive (could upgrade for
the choice between Vista or XP is up to what you want really and what you think of both operating systems, things like RAM or a DVD-RW are cheap to change/upgrade, an operating system is much more expensive.

thanks for your comments. i bought the item from ]here

The optiplex systems are meant for business and wont have very good upgrading potential, the Vostro systems are meant for general purpose use, based on the specs i have to say the optiplex is the better system.
