White Spirit, Isopropyl Alcohol, or Thermal Paste Remover

Sorry this may seem like an odd request but does anybody know where I could buy any one of these 3 on the high street at a reasonable price ?

I need to clean thermal paste off a heatsink and I know any one of these solutions can do the job, I'm just having trouble finding them apart from the Thermal paste remover which is £7 at Maplin.

Thanks

I use a can of carburettor cleaner I got from Halfords a while ago - cleaned up my xbox 360 chips and heatsink a treat - it even removes expanding builders foam.
I maybe wouln't use it directly on the motherboard......

b q has white spirit oily and non oily i m looking for thermal paste for my sink friend used nail varnish remover on mine now need to buy some

White spirit from B&Q or any DIY outlet

buy some thermal paste baby daughter did'nt let me finish typing

Youre fine using surgical spirit which is widely available

Make sure you use a lint free cloth (lens cloth etc)

Isopropyl Alcohol, is the best, leaves no residue and evaporates quickly.

I wouldn't use anything else on electronic parts.

Go to a good chemist and get some ordered.

Is there any large chemist who would sell Isopropyl over the counter? I live in the Centre of Manchester so ideally if it was a place on the high street then that would be perfect.

I have also been told that nail polish remover works but I think that stuff can be a bit pricey if you buy it from Boots, can anybody recommend a good place that sells Surgical Spirit ?

Thanks for all the replies so far by the way guys, I really didn't expect this large a response.

Any pharmacy can order it for you, not many of us keep it in. Its about £8 for a 70% 500ml bottle. Try morrisons cos ive just checked and its showing up on my computer.

Awesome, maybe I should try that then, the only reason why they ask if they keep it in stock is because it's a bank holiday weekend and I fancied trying to fix this whilst I had 3 days off, I suppose it's my own fault for not looking into it earlier in the week though.

Order it before 12 noon and it will be there tonight, after this and it will b tomorrow. We get 2 orders daily

I needed to use some Isopropyl Alcohol once to clean the remains of silencing insulation from the inside of my case (boy was THAT a waste of money!). I simply walked into a normal looking chemist shop in Wakefield where I happened to be at the time and bought some over the counter.

And yes, the Isopropyl Alcohol and a bit of elbow grease worked a dream.

IA is great for many things quite a handy bit of kit to keep actually, worth every penny.

Nail polish remover can be a bit of a tricky one, they often contain various additives that may not be good for your components.

Blah blah remember to use it in well ventilated area, its a bit potent

The only thing is that I'm not sure where the nearest Morissons is to here, I don't actually think there are any stores local to the centre of Manchester.

Can I order it online with them and then find a branch to collect it from ?

I'm glad you told me that, it has probably saved me from receiving a major ********** from the other half this weekend. :-D

By the way, I think a couple of you already guessed, but this is to remove stock thermal paste from my 360 which has started to randomly freeze and display 3RL again.

Any particular chemist you could recommend ?

One problem with living where I do is that the only local pharmacists are the big chain ones ie Boots and Superdrug and I'm not sure if they would sell anything like that.

Should do, tell them that you need to clean some processor components for a computer.

It is a recognised usage. See if you can get the number for your local boots and speak to the pharmacist, saves a trip.

I might try Boots then, realistically I shouldn't have too much of an issue with getting things like this since I work in IT and my partner is a student Physio but there you go.

If by any chance I can't get hold of IA this weekend then would White Spirit/Surgical Spirit be OK ?

Just out of curiosity; would these work ok ?

I think these dry out too quickly

Original Poster

I thought they looked a bit too good to be true.

Rustins cellulose thinners is 100% pure solvent and should do the job. You can get it in Wilkinson for about two quid for 125ml.

Original Poster

That would do the trick, I just need to find a Wilkinson's now, I know there is one in Stretford but I dont really fancy travelling all the way out there.

The Akasa TIM clean is quite pleasant and comes out through a small hole in the middle of the top so it's easy to put a small amount on a cloth. If you were building or tinkering with computers I'd definitely recommend it but if you just want it for a single use I can see you might be reluctant to pay £7 for it.

Original Poster

Well I might need it again at some point so it could be worth picking some up and leaving it in the cupboard, I don't mind paying around the 7 quid mark if it looks like a quality product but unfortunately the one that Maplin sells does not.

Do you know where I could buy the Akasa stuff from ?

if you have a uPVC fascia stockist in your area you can try this (it smells like pear drops !)

Sounds good but I wouldn't know the first place to look really, I'm sure there are uPVC places in Manchester but I wouldn't really know where to find one.

I'm thinking about just trying some white spirit or something from an arts supplies store.

Just be carefull with whitespirit, you dont want any oily based products, you want something that is gonna dry dead quick and not leave a residue.

you can try "Manchester Roofline Plastics" 01617 778451

Thanks, maybe I should just bite the bullet and buy the thermal paste remover from Maplin then.

It's a citrus based solution from the looks of it.

Thanks for that, unfortunately I just had a look on google and it looks like they are in the middle of an industrial estate in Irlam somewhere so it could be difficult for me to get to (I don't drive unfortunately).

Right I would go for this, Maplin stock this ]CLICKY

Its about the same price, I would feel happier using this, Don't think I would go near a CPU with any fruit

Ah, I didn't realise Maplin did more than one. They do the Akasa one (it's on their website ]here) so I assumed that was what you were talking about.

I don't know where else you'd get it apart from a local computer shop. I got mine online years ago.

Oh cool, I think I'll just go to Maplin then since I probably wouldn't get anything cheaper in a chemist and there's a Maplin about a 5 minute walk away from my apartment.

Thanks a lot guys, I still can't believe that this thread got such a positive response.

You'd be surprised./. I think 500ml of Isopropanol alcohol cost me around £1.50

Where was that from mate ?

I use nail varnish remover which is very effective

A bog-standard run of the mill chemist in Wakefield about 3 years ago.

Seriously, don't buy from Maplin etc, just go to the local chemist. You'll deffo have one that isn't part of boots/etc, maybe look in yellow pages or something.

Yeh but does it evaporate straight away like isopropanol (isopropyl) alcohol does?
