Who is in the wrong here?

So with the cold weather spell we have been having, i have been defrosting the windows/heating the car for the wife by running the engine and locking the door and the wife has been using the spare key to get in
This morning went out to defrost the car, started it up and locked the door, few minutes later said to the wife "where is the spare key" she looked at me and said "in the car".
Now not only did she leave the key in the car, it was left in the cup holder where it could be seen from the outside.
Did get the door open with help from a neighbour.
The wife blames me for not checking to see if the spare key was in the house (it's always there) and i blame her cause no sane person leaves a spare key in the car.
So who is right and who is wrong. (she does not go into this site,so that is why i am posting this)

You're in the wrong, it's illegal to leave an unsupervised vehicle with the engine running.

Also, it's just asking for it to be stolen, and your insurance won't pay out either.

You do realise most people will take your comments seriously because what you've posted is 100% true.

    The weather is.

How were you locking the door? One key in the ignition, one key in a cup holder

Your to blame for committing the offence of 'quitting' under the road traffic act.

unless his car is parked on the road, it's not illegal. you can do what ever you want on your own drive as it's not a "public road"

You men have all become wimps, I get the Wife to do all of that for me.

hmm, so if a car is on your drive, it no longer gives off noise and emissions? i want me one of these special drives.

doesn't matter about the noise and emissions

your own drive is not a public road, just like a 10 year old can drive a car around your field if you own a farm

then he should just mention the noise as the emissions wont be annoying anyone except bill oddie, as for post #14 depending on the age of the car i remember with my first car you could push the lock down and close the door, leaving the car locked

you can lock most cars without a key. Just pull drivers handle up and depress button and shut door. Guess this is what the OP did so his fault imo for not ensuring spare was available in the house. This was always gonna happen eventually as OH has to unlock the car using spare so obvious that she got in straight after without returning spare to the house.

So then, leaving the spare key inside the car, visible to everyone and anyone is fine is it?

She left the spare key inside the car by accident, in a cup holder? that is just careless, how can you defend anyone doing this?

He left the key in the ignition on purpose to keep engine running, and knew a spare existed and didn't dream his oh would be stupid enough to leave the key in the cup holder??? how is it not her fault?

When she unlocked the car, it should click that you should put the key you just used to get into the car into your pocket/bag, and not just plonk it down anywhere. Common sense really.

Actually if you read through the sentance correctly it can be construed as 2 different occurrences. Leaving a car running while parked and unattended OR leaving the engine running while staionary on a Public road.

do you turn your engine off at every set of traffic lights then?

The system you used is to blame. It was designed in such a way that it was prone to human error and had no safety checks.

Some of the things you could have done are

    1. Had the keys hanging in the same place in the house so you could see the other key was present when you took the main key to start the car in the morning.
    2. You could have been the one who opened to car last thing and immediately returned the key to the house.
    3. You could have tied some elastic to the spare key and then when your wife opened the car door she could have let go of the key and it return to the house through tension.

People and companies who set up systems of doing things that rely on no human error are deluding themselves and always come unstuck.

You missed the part where it says its fine to leave your engine on at lights or traffic.

see, this is what happens when you put a women in a position of responsibility. women: know their limits.
