Who uses their car for work and claims petrol expenses and thinks It's time the Inland Revenue increased the mileage rate?

I can't understand why there hasn't been an article in the press about this. Surely the mileage rate should be increased. I think by at least the 25% petrol has risen by recently. What does everyone think and does anyone have any ideas on how to get this highlighted in the national press?

Currently I dont, but I should & can.... it used to be 40p per mile for the first 10k then 25p there after.

Someone mentioned recently that they thought it was now 40p all the time, which I think is adequate, but if it does still drop down to 25p after that threshold then yeah I think that should be increased.

its still 40p for the first 10k and 25p thereafer for cars.

Red top tabloids will always make a big deal of stories like this. Send them an email.

[email protected], added advantage of being able bresticals next to your article IRB

Should be reviewed and adjusted imo. Fuel prices have rocketed although one should not profit from travel expense claims (or so I've been told by my employers!) Drops to 25p after 10k miles.

    i do !

Thanks Minstrel Man - will look into this. In my opinion it should be increased as the increase in petrol prices is definately not an insignificant one. Also, the mileage rate was set at a rate that supposedly takes into account the wear and tear to your own car caused whilst using it for business miles so by the time you pay for servicing and maintenance, tyres etc etc, there isn't a lot left

I'll put that to the o/h - I can just see him loaded up with sample cases and wobbling to his appointments on his old bmx - ha ha! Seriously - his company check the mileage.

Not far fetched at all. Portsmouth City Council offer normal mileage rates on push-bike to relieve congestion...

edit: I'm guessing other councils do - anyone else want to check?

not only the wear and taer on your own car, but the increased amount in insurance you "should" (if you declare it) pay also.

I think its a bit OTT to allow the full rate, but certainly a good initiative, however its not like you can prove it - whats to stop someone getting the bus, paying £2 to claim 15 miles?

I suppose either way it's another car off the road... I think there are standard distances allowed - like between two offices, hospitals or schools. Don't know why anyone would want to drive in the city anyway, roads are all too narrow and you barely move for the traffic...

So this only applies if you work for the local council??

I've been meaning to ask something similar for ages, am I able to claim for this?

I am a self employed sole trader and use my car for business purposes as well as personal use. If I can claim how does it work? Do I get cashback or do I get a higher tax free allowance or can I claim it as an expense?

    Thanks for any help.

I'm a limited company so my set up is slightly different, your best off asking your accountant or have a look on HMRC's website for clarification on the rules for sole traders.

I think the idea is that cars in the city cost the council money... cost a lot of money slowing everything down and parking is often a nightmare so to reduce the numbers they offer incentives. A company is unlikely to offer something similar unless they have limited parking on multiple sites...

As well as the cycle2work scheme mentioned here a few times Portsmouth CC offers an interest free loan for bicycles.

If you work for a local council, school, hospital etc I recommend having a chat with your line manager or calling the civic offices to find out if it's offered where you are

Discount bus and train (even ferry) fares and loans are available all over the country to help you give up the car!

    I do..

Oh, you might have got from my posts that I am all for reducing the number of cars on the road.

Unless it is essential use - which is usually fairly easy to judge - people should be encouraged to use other means. Using a car is bad for you, the envirnment, your city, your children... blah blah blah... The reason many people use cars is because they are lazy and unnecessary luxuries need to be paid for. If you want to pollute my air then you should also be paying for research etc to clean up the air.

If you're not getting enough back then you should have to pay for the luxury. If it's essential, couriers, taxi drivers, people working nationwide etc etc then the costs should be absorbed by the government.
