firstly its not a stupid thing...its part of my religion!!

We do it so it allows us to appreciate what we got and understand how the poor feel and live! Also its a great detox!!!!

During this month Muslims ask forgiveness for past sins, pray for guidance and help in refraining from everyday evils, and try to purify themselves through self-restraint and good deeds.

*popcorn ready*:)

EDIT: I don't, but guess it must be hard. I had a toast, pack of Jaffa cakes and 3 cups of tea and still very hungry:oops:

Abz;6194293

Just because it is part of your religion it does not stop it being stupid.

The human body needs water and food to survive, depriving yourself of it for long periods can make you ill.

I am sure if their was a god he would not be so silly as to tell anyone to not eat and drink during daylight hours.

Hi Abz

How long do you have to Fast mate and how often ?

That reminds me, i'm starving, i'm off to get a Full English Breakfast :-D

nope... i'm not fasting... i'm just about to order a delivery from Pizza Hut.. cant wait.

i really dont want this to turn into a massive debate/argument. Just wanted to know who was fasting and hows it going for them!

Hopefully people will stay away from making "comments" etc...but i guess there is a better chance of hell freezing over

yeah i guess...this is where some people gain their strength! Oh well.....i guess it might make the day go quicker

A few years ago I had to go to Saudi Arabia on business.

This is a strong Muslim country and Ramadan was just about to start.

It seems as well as people not eating or drinking during the day (which made people very tired and drowsy), many people had parties or feasts after dusk to meet up with friends and eat and drink.

The comapny had put posters all around the building warning people about leaving work and driving to these parties at high speed because they were so hungry and thirsty.

Of course because they had not eaten or drunk it made them drowsy as well so driving was even more dangerous.

Not a great time to be on the road when everyone is tired, and rushing to get to one of these parties.

you see i agree that fasting does make you drowsy, but during this month whilst fasting its actually recommended to sleep and rest...and travelling long distances is not allowed. If you have to travel then you cannot fast!

But to be honest its all about what you eat in the evening. As long as you eat the right food its all good. A lot of carbs etc etc

Living in Egypt for the past 5 weeks, and have been there for Ramadan, let me just say this.

Ramadan is anything BUT appreciation of the poor, how you can state such a thing is disgusting. So "us" normal people starve for a few hours a day, and then when the sun goes down, and it's time to eat, you can eat ANYTHING you want, ANYTHING. So, you basically stuff everything down your neck, MUCH MUCH MUCH more food than ANY poor person can afford in a month, you eat in one day.

We went to a few Ramadan eats in Restuarants, and it is basically like taking the **** out of the poor, and I mean, it would be better to go up to a bunch of poor people and say "haha you are poor you little idiot". In one place, we had 5 courses, it was basically 5 dinners, and the cost of ONE day for a family in Egypt is double a security guards salary for a month over there.

The food was non stop, and it's like that in houses too, so much food is cooked, it's a **** take. And you eat more than you normally would in a day, way more.

So Ramadan appreciation of the poor? Heh, hardly. Just an excuse to eat loads of food.

Poor people eat Breakfast VERY EARLY at sunrise (Middle east, Sunrise is around 5-6am) which is like a few bits of bread with falafel, and then eat NOTHING until 6.30pm which will be mainly bread, cheese, veg, and maybe once a week they will eat a piece of meat. Then they have maybe a piece of fruit and thats it. Calories? way under 2000. Nutrition? bad.

You "fasting" wannabes will I guess eat at 7-8am loads of cereal, maybe eggs, few pieces of fruit, lots of water, toast etc etc. Then at 6.30pm you eat LOADS of carbs and meat and fruit and sugars and treats all the way up until you go sleep. Calories? Way over 2000, Nutrition? Excellent.

Plus, the water they drink in the Middle East is not great, not filtered that great.

Unless you are copying a poor mans diet, you might as well give up.

I agree some people dont do what their suppose, but speaking for myself/family, during this month we donate alot of money/food to people!

And in the evenings the idea is not to stuff yourself and eat more than you normally do, the whole idea to eat as you normally would!

that's not what ramadan is about though is it. that what people in a restaurant in a city in egypt did. it is about the suffering that poor go though and you give to the poor. in my family we feed the poor our food that we would have eaten if we werent fasting. and as a result during ramadan i have one meal a day. just because your experience is negative doesnt mean that's what it is all about. dont be so foolish.

I am not a Muslim but have a great deal of respect for those whose faith is strong enough to fast.

I am far too selfish to not eat for so long, I just couldn't do it.

Well done guys.

I dont think calling people animals is really called for,

well when you read all the BS about pork and eating this and that in a fasting thread it does get a little tiresome.

for the record fasting isn't hard when you believe in what you are doing. i feel sad that other poeple can't see that.

Not fasting, just had my breakfast, yum

Good luck. I personally think it's silly - Food you can do without, but I need liquid to survive, but that's my opinion so if you're doing it, have fun.

My experience is from all over, I'm half Egyptian and have been going there for years and years, so I have many family over there.

Like I said in my original post after the edit, if you follow a poor persons diet, fair play, that IS Ramadan.

The only good thing is they have a God's Table set everywhere in the city and the outskirts, the wealthy get together and donate money to buy meals for the poor, then vans go around giving the poor food, that's respectful.

bykergrove;6194484

I don't know why you include me in your quotes. The question in the main title (or should be) is Who's fasting. I simply replied, as the question was asked.

Maybe "Ramdan Fasters: How is it going?", might have been better, rather than taking offence when people say they are not fasting when you ask them whether they are or not.

Marina;6194510
