If you think thats stunning you should have watched it on BBC HD.... now that is stunning!

I'm on my second 42" Plasma.

Initially bought the Aldi Tevion 42" Plasma for the World Cup in HD.

Changed it now for a Panasonic TH42PX600PED.

It wasn't me who wanted one, it was the wife, but now I've got one I couldn't imagine having anything smaller!

The Tevion was excellent, but had a few niggly problems. The Panny is faultless.

So you're back in blighty then cutthroat....just a quick query as I've never been sure..what is the difference between plasma and TFT.....did I not read that Sony were ceasing production of plasma screens because of unreliability problems?....just trying to broaden my education!! LOL
Just back in time for a Toon revival!

Been rumoured for a couple of years now, largely because they don't manufacture their own screens and as you say, worrying reliability issues

Hi CC,

Yes back yem marra.

I'm no expert on the technolgical differences between TFT/LCD and Plasma, but I do know of some of the advantages and disadvantages.......

Plasma suffers from "screen burn-in". Prolonged images in one place on the screen will leave a lasting image. LCD/TFT will not.

Plasma has much higher contrast ratios than TFT/Plasma. The contrast ratio dictates how well dark colours and blacks are displayed.

LCD/TFT will last approximately twice as many hours than a plasma set.

Plasma will display fast moving images and colours very well, whereas LCD/TFT will not in comparison.

LCD/TFT suffers from a limited viewing angle. Plasma will outperform TFT/LCD becasue each cell is individually lit giving much greater viewing angles.

For Video or DVD playback, plasma is better by a good margin. For DVD, or any streaming video content, TV or HDTV - plasma will deliver non-distracting, high contrast, high colour saturation viewing. LCD/TFT is not as good when doing a same size comparison, while still looking good at the smaller sizes.

It's also a general rule of thumb that LCD is fine when small-ish, but if you're venturing into the realms of screen size greater than 32" Plasma is the one to go for.

Hope this helps,

32 inch Samsung TV - I had a 28 inch CRT which I liked for many years but the main problem was that I end up moving home a lot (on average once a year every year for the last eight years) and the CRT was too big and too heavy. It was a struggle to move with two people....so I went LCD, the image quality is not great for SDTV but I can pick up and move the device myself which is great. It is also HD and supports 60Hz, it works great as a PC monitor for showing photos - I've been pleased with it overall.

Recently upgraded from a 26" CRT to a 42" Plasma Hitachi PD9700. Amazing picture especially on SKY HD and XBOX 360. Close to getting the Panasonic PX600, but wife didn't like the silver stand.:-(

Still happy with the Hitachi. Now for the credit card bills.

all this talk is depressing me :-(

I've had a 42" plasma for 4 years and knock wood no problems at all. Looking to upgrade to 60" HD but will stick to LG as they're fantastic screens.

:-D 37" LCD HD ready:-D

40" Samsung LCD Here. Changed it recently from a Panasonic 36" CRT and sometimes wish I hadn't:-( With a disk in my HDMI player I sit here mouth open with how good the picture is. Then turn to watch something on the tuner and wish I still had the good old CRT!! Most of the time the skin tones on the LCD makes people look like corpses (bluey grey). I wonder what this is caused by?
