    Why ban multi-ids

A person I was dealing with has had this added to the thread "Thread closed and OP banned. Multi ID's not permitted."

Obviously if the person has broken the rules then that is fair enough. And I do not need to know the details in this case either.

My questions though are these - why the ban and why would someone want to have multi-ids?

I can understand on auction sites using one of your personalities to bump up the price but that cannot work here surely? I cannot think why anyone here would need two logins unless it is to avoid the 7 day rule perhaps?

Whilst I am very happy with the deal, and it was my first meet on this site, I am glad that there are people looking out for dodgy deals. I have no idea how you do it but this brings me to my final question (thank goodness!). If someone is under suspicion but not proved, would a mod step in and warn you before completing a deal?

because the owners of the forum still cannot comprehend that more than one person can live in a house and all the occupants could be using the internet, (isn't technology amazing!) think masculine chickens

if someone selling something gets banned while a deal is taking place or was about to take place the buyer should be told why the seller has been banned.

in this case part of the reason was put as the topic but why was his first ID banned? is he/she trying to scam people? what if the buyer has already paid for the item but not updated the thread? what if the seller is a genuine honest person who has been banned for some lame reason and cannot login to get the address of the buyer to post the item? seems like a fair bit of trigger happy banning goes on around here

oh, so if my wife were to use this site, then we risk a ban because we have the same IP address (or whatever is traced?) That is good to know, thanks.

yeah, because most of the people who run this site live alone and will always live alone

If you have multiple ids and you get caught - then the original account gets suspended and the newer multi gets banned.

I can think of no genuine reasons for an individual to have more than one account. Those that do have them use them to get around suspensions, perhaps push up prices when selling items, to start flame wars and insult other members and to get multiple entries to HDUK competitions......

To my mind all the accounts should be banned - the original and the multi's.

Multi ids can be used the manipulate feedback, make non existent offers and circumvent the rules in fs/ft and are correctly banned

If you are dealing with a member who is banned in fs/ft you should use the other contact details received to finalise the trade(or pull out) as per rules

Just to add- we don't "ban" members from the same household, a couple of members in this thread have given you incorrect information. We ask them to let us know their circumstances and request that only one member per household uses the for sale forum.

Members may think this is strict, but we don't do it for our benefit, we do it to protect buyers and sellers in the FS forum and to keep the site fair.

How exactly does that protect people in the FS forum? I would have thought as long as they dont try forcing prices up (which they wouldnt do fi their both clever as you will have a record of their ID's) then having two people from the same household could benefit a buyer! Reasons -

    - If a buyer/seller is having issues with contact then their is another potential avenue of contact through the other member in the household.
    - Im assuming both members would be of different sex (at least different age) so you could get a bit more variety in the FS section.
    - If one member of a house can be trusted then chances are . . . . . . . . so can the other one!

I could carry on giving you loads of reasons why that logic is flawed.

Surely a better idea is to request that they just have no dealings with each other in the FS? You have already asked them to let you know so if X and Y live in the same house and use this site and X has lots of offers/feedback from Y then you know somethings up and a ban/suspension is in order

When I was in a small office one of the guys had 2 ebay id's one personal the other to buy office stuff. He did not want colleagues to know what he got for personal use. Also my brotherinlaw has 2 ebay ids, one for personal one for business - he says it is easier for squaring the books.

No idea if these "excuses" would apply to the HUKD situation though.

I had not thought of the feedback side though! Nor of boosting their own rep. Where are the rules anyway, is there a link to them?

They don't allow usernames on the same IP address either unless you ask really nicely beforehand.

I got banned for a while, being accused of having two usernames when there were like 3 of us who lived in the flat!

have always said multi ids should be linked back to original account, and yes i know all about following the guidelines and getting contact details but that doesnt make it right a second account can have loads of negatives and get banned whilst the original account is suspended for a day and their feedback can be left unblemished
