Why Can't FS/TS ads be advertised elsewhere?

Found 8th Feb 2008
Just looking to get a insight into why this rule is here.

I undertand that the sites sets the rules and if we don't like it we can use another site etc.. but from my perspective the question why is always a valid one so...

What value/benefit does this rule add to trading?

Example if I was selling "Call of Duty 4 for £30" and I only wanted asking, I would use AVFourms as its specialised, the right target market and also would allow me to advertise elsewhere.
I couldnt list this on this site thereby a potential "HDUK - Buyer" is missing out.
Likewise if I listed here does that mean I can not sell it to a 'real world' friend etc..

Just looking for some feedback, as since I joined it seems one of the most confused issues.

Hi crow99

The rule you are refering to is something in place to limit any confusion. If items are listed for sale elsewhere it could lead to potential conflict of offers and even payments and with the rules the way they are they would limit such problems.

I hope this answers your question.

Col

You can sell it to real world friend, just tell them the item is no longer for sale and close the thread.

I think the rule is in place incase people sell it elsewhere and people say they will take it for saking price on the forum. This person would then think they have got the item while waiting for the person come online. Only to be told they have already sold it.

Last time I saw that happening the seller got a ban afair.

You're not allowed to do this on the AVForums either, nor on Amazon, nor on eBay, nor on probably most sites where you can trade for the above reasons.

Would be the same as selling elsewhere online

AVForums let you sell games, and certain other items elsewhere

Amazon I can understand because a seller commits and pays at that point likewise with Buy It Now
The only logical explanation I can think of is:

So that the seller doesnt get two offers for full asking price at the same time and one buyer is disappointed

Helps remove temptation from seller incase they get two asking price offers and decide to scam somebody. Not a great reason mind!
If the seller simply stated item advertised elsewhere then any buyer making a asking price offer would know it hasn't been accepted until the seller says as such.

I think this rule limits the number of advertisers on the site particularly as we can edit/mod our own posts so easily, if it sold elsewhere you would just pull your add. Likewise it gets broken a lot!!!

Again not trying to be problematic just trying to get a understanding

its to stop scams

whats to stop me listing something here and on ebay and taking money from both and no item.

Makes the buyer feel 'safer' i guess

Whats to stop you listing it here, taking the money and no item whilst listing it in secret on ebay and doing the same? Nothing:thinking:

i did think about that but were taling about reasons for the rules.

But imho opinion if someone wants to scam people this rule is not going to stop them doing it.

Isnt that part of the reason why your advised to get a ebay contact to see if they are listing there 2?

Thats one of the points. People must be committed to selling through the forums before they post a thread, its a good thing. Yes you can edit your own posts etc. but you will be banned for it if you remove the OP or important info or try to cheat the system in another way.

At the end of the day the rule is pretty useless, as its pretty much unenforceable, except on those that say :

"see ebay item xxxxx"

"also advertised on avforums/local paper"

etc.

Basically those that are too lazy to READ THE RULES and so therefore get caught

By the way Allstar, most people have more than one ebay account so theres nothing to stop them giving 1 for FB and selling on the other. Good game this innit ;-)

me im too naive then cos i only have one lol but thanks for pointing that out to me

You must be one of that rare breed who think that eveybody on the internet is who they say they are and all the sellers on Fleabay are honest. You will soon become disillusioned. :whistling:

A lot of people, especially sellers will have more than one account on eBay. It's advisable to do this if you are a seller for many reaons, but the two main ones are:

1 - You don't always want your buyers to see what you have been buying yourself. e.g. If you're selling Bibles, it might put potential buyers off if they can see that you had bought a copy of "Devil Worshipping For Beginners" the week before. Or from a business perspective, if you buy your stck in bulk through eBay, you won't want your customers seeing how much you paid for it.

2 - So that any problems with sellers, do not affect your own ability to sell. Things can go wrong with any transaction, so if you buy something and get a negative, then that will affect your score, and go againts you when you try and sell something. There are also a few dodgy sellers out there who will use the threat of a negative over you in order to stop you reporting their dodgy practices. If you have an account just for buying, they can not do this, because getting a negative won't affect your ability to buy, it only affects you if you want to sell anything.

I thought the reason for a second account is to bump up your prices to roughly want you wanted as buy it nows rarely work ( and the fees for listing at higer than 99p cut into your margins) and listing cheap can result in a stinging if only one person goes for it.

Just to add to point 2, if you buy and sell on the same account and buy something from a 'nasty sort' they can get a bit stalky and wreck any auctions you decide to put up with throwaway revenge accounts. Best to keep the two apart imho.

Whilst shill bidding does go on, it's the minority who do it.

As for BIN not working, that depends very much on what items you are selling. A lot of the items that I have sold in the past, were sold using BIN and I had no problem selling them.

Thanks Shengis! I'd meant to mention that too.

I am an honest seller on ebay, but with the prices that they and paypal charge, it is not worth it to sell on there.
That is the reason they will get more and more scammers trading.
Honest sellers will go to their local car boot sales to sell their wares and at least make some money.
