Why do pharmacies take so long?

Maybe a reason for this, but whenever i go to the pharmacy they take forever to throw a couple of packs of pills in to a bag. how hard can it be?. Went today with a prescription and the lady said come back in half an hour to collect, i thought, bit long as it's only 2 things, should really take about a minute. Went back in 1 hour as to give them time, and the lady said could i wait a minute . waited 10 mins more to get them. Why so long?(nobody else in the shop), it was just some bath stuff for my boys dry skin and teething gel. just don't understand it the delay for a simple task.

    whinging over for the day!

they have to put some magic pharmacy dust in the bag..... and they have to chant some voodoo over it whilst standing under a picture of their high preist Glaxo.

    why didnt you ask them?

Its all the forms to fill in and computers to update

    LOL!! V funny!!!!:-D

It is a good point though -

Like WHY do they? You could go into a Big Boots 1st customer of the morning and still get told the same! Or go ointo a tiny chemist in a village, and she disappeears off to Narnia or somewhere before returning with a smile on her face - that I don't understand!

    xxxx

Loads of reasons, the Pharmacist can be on the telephone speaking to a customer so can't check the prescription right away

He's out getting lunch,or busy eating it.

    He/she is praying

Other people have left prescriptions there to call back,so although the shop maybe empty there maybe loads of prescriptions before you,or ones there that have been collected are being prepared for delivery.

Also, when a customer is coming back to collect a script its way too easy to put it to one side thinking you'll do it soon and then forget until they come back to the shop and ask for it.:whistling:

Putting the sticky labels on the bottles ain't easy.

You don't want the chemist to make a mistake surely ?

Asda and Boots never have my complete prescription, always need to go back for the rest of it.

Because they're too busy dispensing Methadone for the Junkies, that's why!

They also have a lot of standard scripts that need dispensing as a day-to-day process - such as repeat prescriptions for nursing homes etc.

I know only too well, used to work in Pharmacy for nearly 10 years.

LOL the addicts always jump the queue as ya wanna get rid of them:w00t:

we would leave card informing them it would be redlivered on monday and it made us chuckle that the smackheads had to go cold turkey over the weekend

It's simple. The longer they take the more time you spend looking around the store to buy stuff.
If you notice, as soon as you pick a few items up of the shelf the prescriptions ready! ;-)

well when I was a student nurse last year I had to pop into pharmacies for prescriptions for my patients very often, and to lots of different pharmacies... always got them straight away!!!

I did wonder back then too... why not for everyone??? Maybe they do just want to get you to buy stuff from the shelves whilst you're waiting.

That would be funny, but methadone is also given to terminally ill people for pain relief. Hope you feel like a complete **** now!!

I reckon it was originally an inside joke. The pharmacist takes your prescription details, walks to a part of the pharmacy just out of your eye line and sees how long they can stand still before collecting your prescription. Except the joke is so old now, it has become part of the job description and nobody really knows why.............

Hardly. It's mainly Diamorphine that's given, and never usually in the home mostly under medical supervision.

    Right then, let me explin...

It is not as simple as "sticking a label on", we have to label the prescription, check against medical history to make sure there an no contra-indications or interactions etc, yes i know for bath stuff it is simple, but how do you know the 10 customers before you didnt say "i'll be back in 30 minutes", sometimes the elderly have anything upto 10 items on their prescriptions. You must wait your turn!

Yes it is probably Boots policy to keep you waiting as they want you to browse and but additional stock.

According to our code of practice we "should dispence all prescriptions with reasonable promptness". Where I work we sometimes collect 300 items from the surgery, all theese need dispensing and checking before about 3pm so they are ready for customers to collect. In this situation customers see no-one waiting so assume the pharmacist is free, far from it.

    Hope this explains. Cheers

The pharmacy staff are supposed to watch them swallow........otherwise they walk out the door spit it in a bottle and re-sell it (spat methadone).

Exactly, and that was my point - this takes up significant time.

Does the pharmacy get money from the NHS for dispensing items or do they do it out of the kindness of their hearts (customer relations)?

The pharmacy gets money, we get re-imbursed the cost of the drug plus a fee per item. The pharmacist does not get paid any more for doing 400 items per day than they would if we did 20 items per day

I doubt that would happen,as they would still have stock they wouldnt let it run out particulary if you made a habit of the above so the pharmacy wouldnt be expecting it until Monday anyway so would have enough stock to last.

When I make my drugs up takes about 10 mins for the kiddie winks as you have to measure water to give the right amount of mg in right amount of fluid.Trust me you wouldn't want them to make a mistake
