Why do razor blades go blunt ????

I've often wondered this, have a shave and they are fine, go back a few days later and its like shaving with an axe what was a sharp shave previously.

But why do they become blunt ? They are made out of metal and are cutting a few fine soft hair.

Do they become blunt because of exposure to water ?

I do think at £2 a throw for some, this is on purpose, and they add something to the metal to make it corrode quickly after a shave. I mean, if you take a sharp knife and use it to cut a bit of meat, does it suddenly become blunt quickly ?

Wonderful question, I was thinking the same when I replaced my razor this morning!

you sure the Missus aint using it on her legs?

Im a cynic so think the companies have them made so they get blunt quick so ppl keep buying them, ive always thought that making disposable razors is a great business as people will always shave

Razors have an almost 4000%, yes 4000% markup. These companies are making HUGE profits... No wonder they want you coming back quicker

    Why do fences get rusty?

Same theory really, sure most blades are a very high quality steel or titanium, but the cutting edge is so so thin that when open to the air, it reacts with the oxygen and hence oxidises and becomes blunt. This effect is enhanced when water is thrown into the mix.

    +1

Someone posted a video on here not long ago of a guy who swore by running his razor up and then down a pair of denims 10 times each way.(against the cutting side, not down the way) I tried it and, and it does seem to work...A bit like the way you used to see the old barbers using their open throat razors on a piece of leather before a shave.

    I remember, this fella?

The sharper the blade the quicker it will get blunt.
So its a catch 22 really.

ten times each way but only on one way of the blade?

re-iterate please lol so you use the non sharp side and run that down the jeans and then up the jeans sticking to the non sharp side or wha?

Reminds me need some new blades mine are so blunt they keep missing the hairs

good quality razer blades DO NOT get blunt, they get BLOCKED, if you keep them unblocked by running water back and front of blades to clear then they can be used over and over. Also you can dettle them and dry them out so they will be really clean. This works with the good quality blades moreover because with cheaper blades it is difficult to get the hairs removed from the blades because the gap between the blades is very thin thus allowing them to get blocked up.

Digging up old relics this evening X)

Do blades go blunt over time even if they have never been used?

Just seen some cheap Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5's on Amazon, but they are in older packaging than the current ones. Will they have lost any sharpness sitting on the self (or in a warehouse) for so long?

Cool I am glad someone dug this thread up I didn't know about this frugal gem!
