Why do sites have discount codes on the items page?

Just wondering why sites use discount codes for items and put them on the items page. Why not just knock the price off the item in the first place?

Is it to make it look like they are offering you something special? Or are they hoping that some people may not read it?

A lot of big companies like Amazon use price scraping tools, this is to avoid the scrapers picking up the discount.

Ah, I see what you mean, i think this is to do with sites/bots that "scrape" pages to automatically price match.

Also if it's a temporary promotion it may be easier to apply a discount in this way than updating the normal price.

Ahh that all makes sense, Thanks.

They hope you forget to use it.....

Working in ecommerce I can add this reason. It's a lot quicker and easier to add a discount code for a set % off than it is to go through and amend all the products prices.

Oh I remember those days... Worked in ecommerce for a couple of big companies, one was really easy to work with, the other one not so much!
