Why does my netbook keep shutting down?

Got a used Acer Ferrari One-200 netbook that keeps on cutting off every so often. My mate said it may be overheating so the CPU/fan needs dusting off. However, I wanted to be sure before I went ahead and took the screwdriver to the netbook unnecessarily.

    Any ideas/suggestions/solutions?

Complete power off ? or ?

    Check power settings first

Start up bios & see what the temps are reading before you start meddling.

    Stop / go penalty?

    Check power settings?

    unquestioned

Start up bios & see what the temps are reading before you start meddling.

Okay, i'll give that a try but the BIOS is very limited in what it provides.

The laptop just cuts off randomly and you get the 'Windows failed to shutdown correctly...' message when you restart.

When windows is running when you get the chance get the temps with something like alcpu.com/Cor…mp/ or SIW / AIDA/Everest If anyone is downloading Core temp click the more downloads and get standalone as their **** installer has crapware in it now

If the BIOS in that notebook is more advanced than normal e.g allows Memory overclocking/ CPU/ voltage controls make sure they are back to deafult and non overclocking with correct voltages (laptops and netbook generally have very limited bios options but might have a hacked bios or an advanced one) (doubt it though)

There are no temperature readouts in the BIOS.

Will try the link. BIOS has very, very basic options. No temp or overclocking options.

Is it a French/Italian mix inside?

Does sound like overheating but I doubt whether "dusting" would fix it and taking it apart could cause you more problems. Check the system logs in event viewer (control panel, admin tools) first to see if it gives any clue as to the reason for powering off. Might be a hard disk issue which is failry easily resolved. In any case, back up your stuff (_;)

I havent migrated from the old laptop yet so its okay if I loose anything or need to install another hdd. I have a spare 250 gb drive I could always try.

I have the same netbook with the same issue. I feel it is an overheating issue as it only seems to do it with heavy use ie watching 720HD movies via XBMC. The keyboard feels very hot and the underneath is also very hot. Will restart straight away with the windows did not shut down message. When the netbook switches off, it is as if the power has been suddenly pulled from the unit.

Yeah, its like suddenly pulling the battery out - its cuts the power.

My laptop was randomly switching itself off , it was a problem with the battery , so i have removed the battery and run it off the mains and it hasnt switched off since, so need a new battery now .

I hope its something simple like that but the overheating suggests its some sort of safety cut off.

Do you find it switches off when you are watching movies online??

I believe it is overheating. May be worth getting a laptop cooler

Yeah I have a Belkin one already but not been using it as most of the time I have been on the move and don't have space to carry it in my bag.
