    Built by slave labour too.

i wasn't too impressed when i went to dubai. all you see is tall buildings! nothing major

its the birth of a major city, they have realized the oil will run out so are investing in tourism and finance.

It's for posers and people who want to brag about being there. I myself would never go as I would't be able to enjoy myself for fear of getting a few years in jail for holding my girlfriends hand the wrong way or something ridiculous like that

It's for the rich, nothing more, nothing less.

when i went it was ramadan and in all honesty was pretty well relaxed for us westerners. my gf and i were never really looked at for holding hands or even the occasional kiss too.

It's become popular as it's 'somewhere different' and compared to traditional European holiday resorts it isn't that much more expensive. Mainly because the Europe ain't as cheap as it used to be especially when you take the Euro exchange rate into consideration.

kissing is accepted, heavy necking isnt though!!! and as for alcohol, just dont get drunk or do it in the street and youll be fine, they should take not in thi scountry instead of letting all the pi55heads off each week!!!

I have been across twice now for conferences, but haven't seen enough to judge as I didn't get to see much other than restaurants, hotels and conference centres.

I found it a very pleasant place, you need to get out of the metropolis that dubai is and do a mountain safari near Oman, amazing, desert safari, take an Abra boat ride across the dubai creek, dinner on the dhow, great experiences and relatively cheap.

I agree with your statement, however I have also seen for myself the way that westeners are sometimes treated in muslim countries. I and a few female others recieved unneccessary harassment when travelling in morocco a good few years back. Not from everyone. But there are some elements (religious police or suchlike), that can be really over the top. Even when steps are being taken to dress and act modestly in countries that are undoubtedly a bit mixed up in their views towards women.
