My query is:

Why is it that the following animals meat is the same as the animal ..

Lamb - Lamb
Chicken - Chicken
Duck - Duck

But the following are not ?!!

Cow - Beef
Pig - Pork
etc.

I don't get it ... i know that you can have different cuts of beef etc but then you can have different bits of chicken ??

Can anyone shed any light on this subject?!

ok i'll give you that but as the op says why is cow beef? :?

beef does not only come from cows! it can come from slaughtered bull, ox, or cow etc

COW is a female, the rest are male, hence you categorise it as beef!

hope that makes sense!

Also ... at what age does sheep become mutton ?? that must be a depressing day .. and do they just get fed up with sheering their sheep one day and go flog them for meat ?!?! hmmm

The fully grown sheep is normally sheep mutton, when the lamb turns into a sheep!

Definitions as to when lamb becomes mutton have long varied. However, it is now generally agreed that the animal should be aged two years or more

when eating beef, you do not know the gender of the animal, you just know its beef!

This differentiation goes back to the Norman Conquest of England. The names of the domestic animals are all of Anglo-Saxon origin, while the names of the meats derived from them come from Norman French and ultimately Latin. The common explanation for this is that after the conquest, Anglo-Saxons were often restricted to menial roles such as cowherd, swineherd, etc. Their Norman masters were the ones who actually got to eat the viands

Cow: Old English cu; akin to Old High German kuo
Beef: Old French buef, ox, from Latin bouv-, bos, head of cattle

because pork has been categorised, it can also come from hogs, and boars as well as pigs?

i think so!

It doesn't matter, meat is meat and man must eat!

I'm sure that lamb is lamb upto one year old, then it becomes Hoggot upto two years old then Mutton onwards.
Mutton is lovely meat, great taste and ideal for casseroles.

Why is a hamburger called so - even though it doesn't contain any ham?

Simple, the beef patty known as a beefburger nowadays originated in Hamburg Germany:thumbsup:

you lot are clever :-)

If female chickens are chickens, and male chickens are cocks does that mean every chicken we eat is female?

Lamb is only lamb if it is under a certain age. Then it is mutton.

Yes - essentially all chicks are sexed and the males segregated and gassed.

The majority of it will be male beef (bullock). The majority of females are kept as dairy herd and probably knocked off for Indian restaurants once they are ready to croak it.

Wait, so all male chicks are killed? what a waste

you also get roosters as well! An adult male chicken

Yeah .. unfortunately. They are of little comercial use. See Hugh Fearnley prog..for a more sensible outlook.

They are used as foodstuff but generally tipped I think.

murabi;3205431

Yeah I agree - taste good too IMO. But vast majority of male chicks are killed.

a male duck is called a drake!

but we just classify it as duck, in different languages, there are different words for male and female, in english its a bit more plain and simple. chicken, duck, etc, but other languages have different words for chicken, and rooster, and sheep, goats etc!

Id rather say I love chicken than say I love cock.
