Why is mobile phone technology still so poor?

My friend just bought the latest iphone and I have to say the camera on it is terrible. £500 is a complete rip off imo. And why do the batteries have to be charged every day, surely a modern battery should last a week.

Think about a laptop charge and how long that lasts.
Smartphones are basically mini computers, £500 is a rip off though.
I haven't looked back since switching to Chinese unbranded phones

he should have got a samsung phone. my galaxy note 3 has 8 mega pixel camera with superb photos. i use it instead of a camera.

Until the spyware was discovered on those Chinese phones

Battery technology is really poor for modern times (or cost-effectiveness to put in the phone?). They talk about 1cm smaller, or a few more pixels. The battery is more important to me than 1cm thinner.
Saw a prototype that charges a S3? in 60 seconds although the equipment including the battery to be charged was bigger than the phone itself. Promising though for the future.

apple is a bit like a designer brand its recognisable and generally you pay more of a premium for apple stuff compared to to other products. But they depreciate less in value compared to other phones over time.

Camera on my Lumia 925 is absolutely fantastic.

You nearly always get at least £100 back for an iPhone though they have got very boring lately. iOS 8 has to be a big update to stay ahead of the game.

Camera on iPhone 5S is among the best, if not the best, compared to my S4 Mini, the iPhone cam is much better. Yes the batteries only last a day, but think what you can do on it, the old Nokia 3210 couldn't do anything but phone and text (pretty much) - Battery was great though.

Battery technology is getting better all the time, and the leaders in development seem to be Apple / Samsung, so you may be paying £500, but these companies are the pioneers of this technology.

I find my phone needs charging everyday. I would expect (well, hope!) it to last one week with reasonable usage of smartphone apps. Admittedly it's the Nexus not Samsung/Apple but it's disapppointing. I have no doubt battery technology is improving massively, I just don't think it is being focused into phones enough (perhaps due to cost effectiveness).

Hopefully it's the next big thing though Phones are getting more powerful so consume more battery life, but we are reaching the point of maximum hardware in terms of graphics etc for a small screen.

    lense protector still on lol

battery tech essentially hasn't changed much in 10 years, whereas mobile phone tech moves on leaps and bounds year on year
and if the camera is as bad as you say then either you're doing it wrong, or you need to get it looked at.

Battery on my Samsung pay as you go lasts about 10 days between charges and it's about 4 years old. Says it all for apple.

The demand for better batteries isn't as high as other specs on a phone. 99%+ of people will have access to an electricity socket at the end of the day so it's just a minor inconvenience, if anything.

there was an article on bbc the other day about new battery technology. there's no magical cure and these devices are a lot more power hungry than nokia 1100s.
people find alternative solutions like keeping a cable at work or in the car, or buying an external battery like the anker.
cameras are poor because of physics. look at what goes in to a £2000 canon lens and then complain that your pocket sized £500 phone, internet device, gps and multimedia player isn't performing as well

A lot to be said for stand alone gadgets.

In many cases, the all-in-one devices perform equally as well as stand-alones in many aspects - cameras is the one that it just cannot, but there are other advantages phones have over expensive kit e.g. instant sharing and on-device editing
