    Why is my Sky Router so rubbish? Any Solutions?

    If I accidentally knock the power button off, I have to turn it on and off and on and off about a million times, and make sure the cables are plugged in correctly a trillion times..... before it decides to connect to the internet.

    Ive gotten 3 replacements from Sky and each time has gotten harder to get them to send me a new one.

    All I wanna do is play Horde on Gears 2!!!!!!!

    I bought a sky router specifically because they are so good.

    I'm on Be Broadband, and bought a sky router off ebay so I could flash it with some custom firmware. Now I can control the Target SNR settings and loads of other stuff. Its brilliant!

    Then why is mine so rubbish ?

    You might need to teach me how to do all that whizzkidstuff. (Preferably when I get a new one from them)

    Had our Sky wireless router for pretty much two years now. Barely had a problem with it - it never gets switched off, you can always get a strong signal wherever you are in the house and I'd probably go as far to say that the broadband has always been a constant connection.

    Probaby go home tonight to find that its had a total meltdown and burnt a hole in the shelf !!

    my sky router was fine it was just ther servers that I found to be poor, only had around 80% uptime my solution was to dump them and go with O2.

    Hm. Seems like it might just be an issue with my particular router. Sky BB is pretty good, it's just this one problem I have. Also, I hate having to call them up saying my router is faulty and them telling me to do all the 'checks' such as checking if the power is on etc. I don't have the time for that nonsense!

    No offense, but it may be more due to a lack of knowledge on the startup process of the router:

    1. You turn it on.
    2. A quick POST (power on self test) is performed.
    3. Inbuilt Ethernet Hub is activated (it's passive, so doesn't talk to anything apart from the internal config).
    4. Wi-Fi adaptor becomes active.
    5. Inbuilt ADSL modem searches for a signal via the phone line.
    6. ADSL connects to the ADSL equipment at your local exchange.
    7. Handshaking occurs between the inbuilt ADSL modem and the exchange to authenticate you to the Sky Network.
    8. After about 30 seconds or so, your router is given a WAN IP address.

    You should now be able to connect to the Internet.

    You'll notice that as far back as step 4, your PC will be connected to the router but won't be able to access anything. You need to wait a couple of mins for the other stuff to happen first.

    That sounds like a line fault rather than the router. I suffer badly from it too - hence my need for the Target SNR adjustment.

    I bet you are a long way from the exchange right?

    I had sky BB and it was shockingly bad! It was hardly ever on and I would get kicked off at least once a day. I phoned them up a number of times and they tried blaming the distance from the exchange, was I up a hill, the list goes on. They tried to scare me to stay with them by saying that if I went elsewhere I'd have the same problem and would be locked in to a contract - I took BB with another company and have never had it go off!

    On that theme, have you tried unplugging all phones from your telephone line and just having the router connected using the microfilter?

    Sky have given out several routers over the years so It would be helpful to know which one you're using. I believe they've now gone for the very popular netgear 834/934.

    I honestly do not know how far I am ...what is the use of a 'Target SNR adjustment'? And if I feel that it is necessary for me to do this can you recommend anywhere that will show me how?

    Very true. I used to have the netgear....which worked fine. I now have the dark blue sagem one ( i think its dark blue). I tried to request another netgear one but they told me its whatever comes in the post!

    If it's taking that long to handshake, it might actually be noise on the line which is causing the problem. Call 17070 on your BT phone and choose the option for Quiet line test. Don't worry, it doesn't do anything more than open the line and let you listen for any audiable noise.

    Failing that, dig out an old modem cable from a PC (with the smaller RJ11 plug one end and a BT phone plug on the other). Remove the filter as well as any other phones on that line and connect to the socket - you don't need a filter for ASDL, but you do need it if you're planning on connecting phones to it. See if that changes anything. You may even want to try this on the master socket - better still, remove the lower part of the NTE5 panel and connect directly into the phone socket behind it.

    If the Netgear worked and the Sagem doesn't then it's likely to be a faulty router. It may be that your line is marginal and the Sagem doesn't handle it very well, but that's still sky's problem and not yours.

    There's not much you can do except contact sky again or simply buy a new router (the netgear one is about £50 I think).
