Why was Germany's first goal not ruled offside?

    Banned
Unless the rule has changed, than the german goalscorer was at least a yard offside when the ball was played across and forward to him.

The commentators on and off the pitch didnt mention a word about this nor even any of the players. I was a little confused as Gomez clearly passed the ball to his left and the ball also went forward. Klose was about a yard in front of the nearest defender.

It wasnt as though the linesman or ref couldnt have noticed this.

the question is, why were germany allowed to field 3 polish players in their starting line-up...
no wonder podolski looked so sad after having scored against the country he was born in (see his expression after goal 1)...

Because although the ball was play forward podolski was level with Klose when he played the ball - Therefore not offside

To be offside you need to play the ball forward infront of the last defender.

    The ball was played backwards.

My other half was shouting offside at the t.v so i assume he thought it was!!

As monkey nut said, the player who received the ball and scored was actually behind his team mate when the pass was made. simple stuff really

he moved to germany when he was 2 therefore easily classes as being German in football law

The ball was clearly played forwards. Check the video.

To the others - so if the the receiving player is level or behind the player passing the ball then it doesnt matter where the defenders / goalkeeper are?

Thats a pretty new rule isnt it?

    Cheers.

Its simple if you know what you are talking about. The FIFA laws make no reference to this rule of offside being ruled out if the receiving player is behind player passing the ball.

Otherwise whats to stop 5 attackers all running past the defenders and jusy ensuring they are level with the player passing the ball. I still think the goal was clearly offside.

    From FIFA.COM

    Offside Position
It is not an offence in itself to be in an offside position.
A player is in an offside position if:
    • he is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the
    second last opponent

A player is not in an offside position if:
    • he is in his own half of the fi eld of play or
    • he is level with the second last opponent or
    • he is level with the last two opponents

    Offence
A player in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the
ball touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion of
the referee, involved in active play by:
    • interfering with play or
    • interfering with an opponent or
    • gaining an advantage by being in that position
    No Offence
There is no offside offence if a player receives the ball directly from:
    • a goal kick or
    • a throw-in or
    • a corner kick

Its been a rule for ages

It don't matter where the goalkeeper / defender is, as long as the player recieving is level or behind the player passing, the ball can be played forward.

Hope that made sense lol, just got up

That's correct. However, it's not that new a rule - it's been around for as long as I can remember, anyway

Doesn't have to be mention becaus in order to be offside you have to be ahead of play/the ball otherwise your onside

Because the player with the ball would have to get further up the field than all the defenders without any of them following him. If a guy runs up the field with the ball then the defenders will follow him, not let him go on his own otherwise he'd be one on one with the keeper.
